HOME BULDING IDEAS: METAL ROOF INSTALLATION There are different types of roof materials that you can see nowadays. Aside from the common roof materials like metal sheets, laminated glass, copper and ceramic tiles, modernized materials are used to build a more modern type of building whether commercial or residential. During the ancient times, people use natural materials to make as top covering of their houses or shelter. Plant stalks, banana leaves and even animal feathers are some of the basic roofing that you can see on old houses. When Ancient people realized that the top layer should give them the strongest protection from extreme weather conditions, this is the time they started to make their houses built with brick woods and stones as part of their roofs. On some due to the merging of technology and human intellect, advanced roofing systems can now be seen on high rising buildings that upgraded the durability, longevity and the environmental and benefits of the roofs. While for some residential areas like Corpus Christi, metal roof installation is still an option because it is more economic and it can also endure many years before the quality depreciates. Some of the modern roofing systems we can find today are thermoplastic roofing, Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer roofing (EPDM), Photovoltaic (PV) panels, and green roofs which are still the most common commercial roofs. What is a metal roof? Compared to other roofing materials, metal roofs do not quickly diminish and are tested to last up to 50 years. Metal roofs are also wind and fire resistance because of the solid materials it uses. Metal roofs have two types:
• exposed-fastener • Concealed-fastener When it comes to DIY projects, exposed- fastener metal roofing is recommended because it is also fastened with screw and you only need basic repair tools available at home to start fixing your roof. How to start your DIY project on metal roof installation? If your area does not need crew builders to do the metal roofing you can do it (ideally men) on your own with the available repair tools you have at home. STEP 1: Measure the space covered- as a smart buyer’s tip: never buy your material if you do not have the checklist including the accurate measurement of your roof. How to compute: Find the: slope (measure the slant from top to bottom or edge) Area: this can be measured by finding the length (L) and width (W) your point of reference is the house area as you measure from the ground. Thus, with the variables you have your roof measurement formula is: Slope x Area or Slope x width x width STEP 2: Buy your materials- for metal roof installation you need the following materials from the hard ware: • jigsaw or power metal shear • Staple gun • a drill and assorted drill bits • roofing nails (1¼ inch) • metal roofing screws • Self-sealing wood screws. • Roofing material ( remember, you should allow at least 10% of excess roofing for contingency)
STEP 3: Install the edging- Once your remove the old roofing and changed any damage roof frame, you can start installing the edging. The edging is used to cover your roof’s perimeter. Use the ¼ inch nails to lock the roof’s edges. STEP 4: Work on the metal panels- When working on your metal panels, be sure that you begin working on the tip or the longest peak of the roof down to edges. The edges of your roof should hang at least ¾ inch not touching the house side walls directly. The screw should be placed 12 inches apart from each sheet of steel. Do the step repeatedly until the whole roof area is covered. Do not over tighten fasteners so that the rubber grommet will not be dysfunctional STEP 5: Work on the metal trim (flashing) – These are placed over the joints of your roof to connect it from different segments. The flashing does not require any size as long as it is placed on the right angle. Step flashing redirects the water back to your shingles. STEP 6: Before you will leave the roof area and clean it, make sure that all edges are covered. Sealants can be applied to secure any nail holes but enough not to make it appear bulky for any repaint. All edges should be left smooth and well done. Metal roof installation materials have wide array of colors, textures and styles that will fit your houses of any type. Installing your own roof will make you save money, just make sure you installed it the right way.
