Today, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) presentedHabitat for Humanity Edmonton with the CMHC Award for Outstanding Contribution to Habitat for HumanityAboriginal Housing . The award was presented at Habitat for Humanity Canada's NationalConference Awards Gala. Habitat affiliates from across Canada arein Regina this weekend for their annual general meeting andnational conference. "I want to offer my congratulations and say thank you to Habitatfor Humanity Edmonton for its ongoing efforts in creatingopportunities for Aboriginal families through homeownership," saidthe Honourable Pamela Wallin, Senator, on behalf of the HonourableDiane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Developmentand Minister Responsible for CMHC. Theirexemplary partnership project with M tis Capital HousingCorporation to retrofit existing rental housing for affordablehomeownership has inspired other Aboriginal housing groups toemulate the partnership model. As well, for the first time eightM tis families at Elizabeth M tis Settlements nearCold Lake, Alberta will become homeowners in 2012 as a result of anagreement signed between Habitat for Humanity Edmonton andElizabeth M tis Settlement. The Habitat for Humanity Awards Committee considered a number ofkey areas in the selection of the winner for this award includinginnovative solutions to challenges faced in Aboriginal housingdevelopment; association and community collaboration on Aboriginalhousing development; number of Aboriginal families served; andnumber of major renovations, including energy efficiencies, toAboriginal housing. "Habitat for Humanity Canada and its affiliates are very excited topartner on Aboriginal projects across Canada where possible.
