It is a common requirement amongst all universities in the world that while pursuing a degree course; your assignments are free from any kind of plagiarism. Plagiarism is defined as copying ideas and content of some other author without authorisation and acknowledgement of the original source. So, a student shall be very careful for any offences related to plagiarism. Writer original content: You should write original and new content as much as possible in your assignments. However, changing few words, replacing words with synonyms or changing the structure of the sentence. You need to understand this distinction between paraphrasing and quotation. Changing few words would not be tantamount to paraphrasing. Common knowledge is basically which is generally available information and can be found at several places for example Barack Obama is the first African American president of the United States. You do not need to cite such common knowledge based information however always ensure yourself that a particular information is indeed a common knowledge. 3. Avoid unauthentic websites: You should minimise direct searches related to your assignments on the internet. Instead go for the databases that your university has provided access to for your academic research. Wikipedia type of sites should never be visited even. 4. Refer/Cite as your write: Once you refer/cite to an author is your assignment, make sure at that time itself; you refer the same both in-text and in the file reference list. Many students ignore this and later on they tend to forget to cite the source. 5. Learn proper referencing style: There are different referencing styles like APA, Harvard, MLA, Chicago, AGLC etc. You should learn the system of referencing whichever is being followed by your university effectively. Different types of sources like a book, journal article, and website have to be referred differently based on the referencing style that you are using. 6. Visit Academic Support Unit or attend university workshops: Many of the universities have support units that help students with their referencing skills. You should definitely consider visiting them for a proof reading of your assignment, if possible, before you hand in assignment. There is great risk of plagiarism in your first few assignments when you enroll for a new degree course as you may not be used to citing references properly.
