In many cases fixing a clogged kitchen sink may require several different attempts and methods. However, with a few simple tolls you probably have around the house, you can remove a clog form your drain. The secret to success is trial and error until the clog is removed. Clogs in your kitchen sink drain can result from a number of substances. However, grease, oil and food are the most common culprits. Gather the following tools and try the following techniques to remove a stubborn clog from your kitchen sink drain. Step 1: Break Up A Greasy Clog If the clog is close to the drain and made up of grease you may be able to remove it with boiling water and dish soap. Begin by removing any water or liquid from the sink. You can dip this liquid out with a cup or ladle. Next, pour a half cup of dish liquid down the drain. Follow the dish liquid by 10 cups of boiling water. Next you will want to let the mixture set until the water has completely cooled. At this point the water should be gone and your drain will be clear, or you will have to try another method. Step 2: Plunge the Clog through the Drain A plunger can be very helpful if you need to remove a mass from your kitchen sink drain. It does not matter if there is water in the sink. Simply place the plunger over the drain of your sink and push down. Be careful to push gently so as not to break your pipes. If you have a double sink you may notice that when you plunge the water simply moves from one sink to the other. In this case someone will need to firmly push a stopper into the adjacent sink. In most cases the blockage will pass within the first few tries. If you plunged more than two minutes and the drain is still blocked try the next option. Step 3: Remove Your Drain Trap Removing the drain trap is a very simple process; however, it can be quite messy. Begin by placing a bucket underneath your the S pipe in your sink drain. You may also want to place towels around the area in case of splatter. Next, take the large pliers and gently begin turning the nut on the S pipe. Make sure you are gentle and that you do not crush the pipe. Turn the nut with the pliers until you can finish the process with your hands. While unscrewing the nut you may notice water starts to leak out. Once the s pipe is removed check it for clogs or blockages. You may want to use an object to push through the pipe. If the S pipe is not clogged you will want to put everything back together and try the next option. In this case the clog is further down in the pipe and requires different methods for removal. If you have tried all of these methods and your sink is still clogged, or you never felt resistance with the snake, you may have to call in a professional. In this case the clog is deep in your pipe system.
