We’re immersed in a digital age that is impossible to ignore. For an entrepreneur or the owner of a small business, taking an active role in marketing your company online is an absolute must. In today’s market, it’s not just a good idea, it’s necessary.

There are certainly some large well-established companies that can get by without really leveraging the power of the web. Of course, these major players do advertise their websites and Facebook pages. So if they’re doing it, we certainly can’t afford not to.

You can boil it down to one simple idea, although hardly the only idea, you need to be found where the customers are searching. More than 97% of your customers are on their laptops, desktops, smart phones and tablets surfing the web. So it’s reasonable that you should strive to do everything in your power to see to it that they find you, right?

What does this mean to entrepreneurs and small business owners?

Many things, but primarily we need to develop and maintain a strong internet marketing focus. Internet marketing is what drives people to your websites, and website traffic translates into greater income. There is a direct correlation to the money you make from your website and the number of visitors to that site.

You may be wondering if internet marketing applies to your business. You may be thinking, “sure, I’ve got a website, but it’s not an online store or anything. So is marketing online really that important?”

Whether you sell online or not isn’t really that important. What your website, your blog, your social networking and your links do is create a connection with your customers. It’s through these connections and research that people make their buying decisions today.

So whether your website sells products or not, or whether your business is based on the internet or not, internet marketing is vital.

Internet marketing, in the simplest definition, is really just a set of strategies to achieve one critical tactic: drive traffic to your websites. Of course, within that one tactic, there are many strategies. The list of strategies is quite large, so we’ll touch only on a few key points. These are some important methods for increasing website traffic, improving your website’s performance in search results and attracting the attention of the web surfer directly.

  • SEO – search engine optimization. This is critical and applies to everything you publish on the web from your website to your blog to your articles. Good SEO is the start of good internet marketing results.
  • quality content – Whatever you put on the web, be it on your own website or out in the virtual landscape, please take the time or expense to see that it’s of the highest possible quality. Good video, text and graphics will help drive your traffic up, but bad video, text and graphics will hurt you to a greater extent.
  • Build links – Building a quality back link profile is vital. You want links to your website from other related websites, blogs and social media. The better the links, the better your results.
  • use social media – By social media, we’re talking about Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, FourSquare and others. Your social media footprint is growing ever more important, both to Google and to the individual. Social media gives people a way to share information quickly and learn about things in which they’re interested efficiently and rapidly.

This article is not meant to be an instructional manual about internet marketing. For that, we’d need to go into far more detail. This is simply an overview of how important online promotion is to your business and your success both now and in the future. Conversely, what you don’t do will also have a large negative effect. If you haven’t done it yet, start marketing on the web. And if you’re doing it now, see where you can improve. There are many resources out there to help you and it’s worth every minute and every penny to become a powerful force on the web.
