A Finnish Corporation, Neste Oil, has expanded the range ofrenewable raw materials it uses by beginning to produce NExBTLrenewable diesel from waste fat sourced from the fish processingindustry at its Singapore refinery. The waste fish fat used as rawmaterial comes from freshwater Pangasius farmed in Southeast Asia. Farmed mainly in Vietnam and Thailand, fresh water Pangasiusfarming is one of the fastest growing types of aquaculture in theworld. Good news is that Neste Oil, a Finnish refining andmarketing company focusing on advanced, cleaner traffic fuels, cannow produce a premium-quality NExBTL renewable diesel from thegutting waste generated when processing freshwater Pangasius afterthe fillets have been removed for human consumption. Similar to other renewable inputs used by Neste Oil, this batch ofwaste fish fat complies with the strict sustainability requirementsof the EU's Renewable Energy Directive. The batch can betraced all the way back to the fish farm. Waste fish fat is alsoaccepted as a raw material for renewable fuel in the US. The NExBTLrenewable diesel produced from the batch cuts greenhouse gasemissions by approximately 84 per cent when compared to fossildiesel and calculated over the fuel's entire life cycle.Using NExBTL diesel also reduces tailpipe and fine particulateemissions significantly. "It makes good ecological sense to use waste and sidestreamsto produce advanced, premium-quality renewable fuel, which is whyour goal this year is to increase the amount of by-products andwaste we use as raw materials by hundreds of thousands of tonscompared to 2011," says Matti Lehmus, Neste Oil'sExecutive Vice President, Oil Products and Renewables. "In addition to focusing on waste and sidestreams, we arecontinuing R&D on completely new types of raw materials. We arecurrently building Europe's first pilot plant to producemicrobial oil from waste and residues-based raw materials at ourTechnology Center in Porvoo, Finland, and expect to complete itduring the second half of this year, in line with our previousannouncement," he added. A particular strength of Neste Oil's NExBTL technology isthat it is capable of processing a very wide variety of differentbio-based raw materials – such as vegetable oils, wasteanimal fat, and by-products from vegetable oil production –into NExBTL renewable diesel. All the raw materials used by NesteOil result in premium-quality NExBTL fuel.
