Tirta Empul Temple
This temple is located to the east of the town of Denpasar, in the village of Tampak Siring, which is situated in the Gianyar regency. The temple is also known by the name of Tampak Siring Temple and is popular for its holy water, which is believed to purify humans and clear them of their ailments and sins. According to a legend, Mayadenawa was an evil king of this village who used to forbade people from worshipping any god by killing them with pools of poisonous water. It was God Indra, who waged a war against the king and brought back life into the dead people by providing them with pools of sacred water. Subsequently, this temple was constructed in 962 AD at the site of this sacred water pool by the Wermadewa dynasty.
The entrance of this temple features two big shrines and a split gate, which leads visitors into the courtyard. This courtyard houses an open air complex, where pilgrims can relax and meditate. The inner sanctum of one of these two shrines houses sanctified bathing pools, where devotees can take a holy dip. There is a sacred stone present in the village of Manukaya nearby that bears inscription regarding this temple. Villagers cleanse this stone in the holy pool of this temple on the full moon night of the fourth month ever year.
This temple was completely renovated in the year 1962 with construction of new shrines. There is a government palace situated on the hill surrounding this temple that was built in 1964.
