Topshop have this week launched their debut bridal collection, withdresses starting at £75. Entitled Tie the Knot, the collection is a first for designerRichard Nicoll too, who has collaborated with the brand five timespreviously, but has never designed for brides before. Nicoll said: I loved the idea of doing wedding dresses withTopshop because I wanted to offer a younger, cooler alternative tomeringue culture, something special, but not precious. Likesomething [my friends] would wear if they were getting married.These pieces are perfect as party dresses too if you re not themarrying kind.
The collection will be available from 22 June, just in time forsummer wedding season, on the Topshop website and at Oxford Circus,Selfridges, Brompton Road, New York, Chicago and, of course, LasVegas. It comprises seven pieces, featuring Nicoll s signature style ofcontrasting sheer and matte fabrics lace, organza and cr pe dechine in shades of white, shell pink and rose. The lowest priced, at 75, is an ice white slip dress; a fluidsliver of silk with a slightly ruffled hem its only adornment,perfect for the 1990s Corinne Day waif bride, and as such currentlythe height of fashion - accessorise with red lips and a daisy chainto complete the look. The standout piece is a floor-length white gown with lace bodice,sheer georgette underskirt, peplum and harness-style straps, whichwill have a limited run of 50. At 350 it s the most expensivedress in the collection, but still considerably cheaper than theaverage 1500 cost of a wedding dress in the UK.
Monsoon and BHS are well-established as high street wedding dresshotspots, but Topshop are the first brand with a young,fashion-forward customer to move into the bridal arena. In a comparable move, Urban Outfitters released a bridal collectionin the US last year entitled BHLDN (translation - beholden),catering ably to the vintage-loving, fixed gear bike-riding,alternative bridal market. For those keen to avoid the clich s of the bridal boutique, wealso recommend Anthropologie (for the bohemian bride) and COS(minimal bride) on the high street, and Net-a-Porter or HarveyNichols for slightly more expensive, but still considerably cheaperand infinitely chicer, options.
