Earn Professional Development Unit (PDU) Credits Without Spending Too Much Money

Business
Maintaining your Project Management Professional (PMP) certification requires that you earn Professional Development Units or PMI PDU to renew your credential, but doing so you can be facing relatively high costs. Class trainings tend to be relatively expensive, with typical tuition fees ranging between $250 and $500 per day, which represents between $25 and $60 per PDU.

Luckily there are less costly ways to earn PMP PDU, and by using all available PDU earning options, your costs can be lowered significantly:

1- Volunteering to provide project management services to a non-profit organization is a recognized activity. Unfortunately, this often requires a substantial investment of time on your part.

2- Reading project management articles in journals or on the Internet earns 1 credit for each hour of activity. This is a great way to get significant credit for PDUs. Up to 15 credits can be claimed in each 3-year renewal cycle. The costs are low and the time well spent.

3- Working as a project manager in your organization also counts for up to 5 PDUs per year.

4- Attending the local PMI chapter meetings is an excellent way to earn PDUs and to strengthen your network. However, such events can also cost some investment in terms of money and time.

5- Writing articles or a blog posting project management would give you up to 15 renewal credits for each article published in a journal. Several project management journals exist and they all welcome article submissions.

60 PDUs during a 3-year cycle is just 20 PDUs per year. However, if your objective is to spend 20 hours per year participating in PDU earning activities, then you have to start planning for it now. Remind yourself that participating in continuing education activities of various types tells your employers and clients that you are a professional Project Manager committed to on-going professional development and personal growth.

Start by reviewing PMI's CCRS website to read the latest information about the PDU claiming process, different PDU categories, etc.

Overall, you should have a plan to maintain your PMI credential, by following some common sense rules:

- Review PMI Instructions

Review PMI's CCRS website to learn more about the latest information about your PDU claiming activities, how to get credit for your PDUs, different PDU categories, different ways to earn PDUs, etc.

- Document & Record

Document and keep a specific folder on your computer to keep all your trainings and PDU paperwork. Keep copies of the training materials, slides, PMI Activity Numbers, number of training hours, name of organization/instructor, and some contact names.

- Avoid Procrastinating

Develop a plan and a strategy for getting PDUs as soon as your new cycle starts.

- Report & Claim

Report trainings and PDU activities immediately after completion. The more you delay the reporting, the less you will remember some details such as dates, PMI Activity Numbers, number of hours, certificate hard copies, name and reference of the organization and the instructor, etc..

- Transfer Excess PDUs

Accumulate more PDUs than required, and transfer PDUs from one 3-year cycle to the next. You are allowed to transfer as many as 20 PDUs to your next cycle, which will reduce some of your headache next time.

PDU-Courses.com offers high quality PMI PDU in Project Management, General Management, Accounting, Finance and Six Sigma. Earn PDUs to maintain your PMP certification at an average of $10 per PDU. These high quality online courses will help you become a better Project Manager in your career.
