The muscle and tissue is softer making the dense cancer cells easier to diagnose with self examinations. Mammograms are important for women over 40 but are not always recommended to younger women due to the tissue density making the disease more difficult to detect. Due to the radiation associated with mammograms it is recommended that younger women only receive them if they have a family history of breast cancer or they suspect they may have the disease.
