Drug addiction or abuse among adults within the age group of 50 and above has increased to 6.3% in 2011 from 2.7% in 2002 as per the study conducted by Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration or SAMHSA in 2011. Apart from alcohol, the most commonly abused drugs were opiates, cocaine and marijuana. Worldwide, it is estimated that in 2010 between 153 million to 300 million people aged 15-64 (about 3.4% to 6.4% of the world population in that group) had used illicit substance at least once in the previous year. According to the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA), drug abuse is costing the United States over $600 billion annually in health care treatment, lost productivity and crime. According to a survey, about 23 million Americans need help with alcohol or drug addiction or abuse. These drugs include the street drugs, prescription medical drugs. However, it is quite surprising that about 93.6% of the 23 million do not think that they need treatment. However, less than 2% of the 23 million thought that they needed help and tried to get treatment. There are different types of alcohol and drug treatment methods being adopted by alcohol and drug rehab centers that are helping people to be freed from their alcohol and drug addiction or abuse. One of the typical alcohol and drug addiction treatment is through holistic rehab. The holistic addiction recovery is based on holistic principles of treating the person and their whole body, instead of the just addressing the symptoms. The alcohol and drug rehab centers using holistic treatment methods use the holism principles and philosophy to treat both the hidden and co morbid disorder of the addict as well as to the physical dependency to the drug that he or she is abusing. On rectifying these things fully, the concerned addict is in a position to start a true holistic rehab process that includes improving the body system and creating a physical and spiritual realignment. Most of the holistic addiction treatment is based on the theory of body equilibrium and restoration or in other words bringing back body to “base”. The holistic drug rehab centers use 12 Step Methodology because of its ability to have a perception of personal accountability and more importantly the “empowerment”. The holistic alcohol rehab just looks at the person who drinks first, and then the causes as to why he or she drinks and finally how to create an environment where use of alcohol becomes unnecessary for psychological needs. Thus, it can be said that the main purpose of alcohol and drug rehab treatment centers or facilities in providing holistic treatment is all about creating a healthy mind and body that can sustain itself and in finding balanced life that is attainable and sustainable.
