Contemporary versus Traditional Home Decor

Home Improvement,Interior Design
When defining the style of your home – is it overly-modern and bland? Or traditional and cluttered? Are you struggling to find a transitional style which incorporates the best of both? Look no further; this article covers design ideas used by a variety of interior design firms to create a harmonious balance between the old and new. These simple designs will result in a comfortable yet classic look which will appeal to most.

Embracing Traditional Design

Many of us decide to invest in new-builds these days. Not only due to the staggering pace in which these houses/apartments are constructed, but they are more often than not a cheaper option. However, the clean and crisp tones of contemporary design are not for everyone. If looking to create a snug and homely design, simple steps can be taken to achieve this. A signature light fitting would achieve this – think morocco themed lanterns or, even a candelabra. Keep it tasteful. Home interior designers favour signature pieces which will add roundedness to the often clean lines present in contemporary homes. Natural elements such as stone, wood and granite are also a good choice. If using wood; try warm tones and don’t be afraid to experiment. If you are lucky enough to have a room with a lot of natural light, give chocolate wood tones a go. Deep tones are rarely used in modern designs.

Crisp Contemporary Designs

A beautiful cottage in the English countryside – sounds like bliss! But traditional houses come with their own series of faults; small windows, low ceilings, crooked walls, or odd shaped rooms. Interior design services tend to suggest using straight lined furniture to counter the soft curves of the walls/floors/ceilings. Colour palettes are often worth revising; subtle colours such as beige and ivory will brighten the darkest of room while creating a relaxed and comfortable space to live in. Using a neutral backdrop will help draw attention to the traditional features that you feel in love with in the first place! If you find natural tones too sterile, focusing on textures to life the room. Go for a berber carpet, a plush rug or a sophisticatedly simple textured wallpaper. This will blur the line between traditional and modern design. Finally, as signature pieces can add a traditional twist – simplicity is needed, to allow the natural features of the room to take precedence. Use spot lights, or small lighting fixtures, conceal clutter and use understated art, cushions, lamps and rugs. The Marriage of Two Designs

Traditional and modern designs are made up entirely of opposing elements. However, striking the perfect balance between the two is not hard. Through neutral palettes, simple clean lines, warmth, textures and the use of lighting – the best of both can be achieved. It is all trial and error, so do not be afraid to experiment. If this article hasn’t got your creative juices flowing; do not fear. Hiring an interior designer can help introduce new concepts and suggest tips to creative a cosy, chic home. And remember, it is all personal preference. Look for furniture, colours and textures that you love. After all, you’ve saved hard for that home. So enjoy it!!
