The Park Ridge city council on Monday will consider revisions tothe city's tree and shrub collection policy that will limit thesize of brush that can be picked up. As a result, residents whoneed to remove large tree limbs from their properties will have touse--and pay for-- professional tree services companies to doso. City officials said brush pickup is supposed to be a conveniencefor residents whose tree branches on their private properties haveblown down or fallen off. But it's not for residents who removelarge trees, producing a lot of yard waste. That being the case,the city is hoping to formally set parameters in the city code tomake that clearer, city officials said.
Brush is picked up almost daily from most residents during thegrowing seasons, officials said. The city collects tree and shrubtrimmings put out at the front curbs. But it's proposed thatresidents may also put them in an alley near their homes. Like Park Ridge Patch on Facebook According to the proposal, twigs and small branches must be brokenup and put in a large Kraft paper yard bag for pickup. Plastic bagswill not be allowed.
The material can also be put into yard wastecarts. Also, branches less than three inches in diameter and five feet inlength must be tied together into bundles. These bundles must notbe more than 50 pounds. Diseased elm trees are now excluded from the brush pickup. But it'sproposed that ash trees will also be excluded.
Tree trunks or shrubs larger than 3 inches in diameter will also beexcluded, according to the proposal. Also, currently excluded are sod, grass clippings, concrete,lumber, ashes, cans, boxes and bottles. The city might make exceptions to the city code after naturaldisasters when many large trees would be knocked over or damaged.In this case, the city's director of public works would make thatdetermination, according to the proposal. If the board passes the new parameters, the policy would go intoeffect immediately, said acting city manager Shawn Hamilton.
