The handsome Galle Fort is located in the Galle Bay on Sri Lanka's southwestern coast, and lays claim to an eventful history dating back to the island nation's colonial period. The initial constructions at the site were made by the Portuguese in the 16th century but it was the Dutch who made the extensive fortifications at the site in the subsequent century. Today it is considered to be a historical, architectural and archaeological highlight, remaining an esteemed monument more than four centuries after its creation.
