Bias in the news is similar to spilled sugar and ants: with one, you’re likely to always have the other. Unbiased news websites are few and far in-between, and unfortunately that doesn’t seem like something that is going to change any time soon. The most recent news story to litter the newsstands is the Trayvon Martin case. Instead of just merely reporting the facts and letting the attorneys do their jobs, news sites were feeding off of nothing but bias. From a sales standpoint, it’s brilliant. By zoning in on what your main target believes to be true and reporting stories based off of their bias alone, your viewership and readership can skyrocket. The problem with this particular practice is that people are seeing only what they want to see, not what they need to see. This is why we need more unbiased news websites at our helm. The pros of unbiased news websites far outweigh any cons. For starters, you don’t have to dig for facts. With unbiased news websites, you’re simply able to just read the news. Unbiased news websites present you with nothing but the facts. In addition to a dig-free environment, with unbiased news websites, you get to form your own opinion. With many news sites, you’re left with nothing more than the opinions of those reporting the stories. News has become more about entertainment than it is about the actual news. Unbiased news websites flip that ideal and put the news first allowing their readers to form their own opinions. Lastly, with unbiased news websites, you get to contribute to the cause. Most unbiased news websites believe in a communal news website. They offer neutral news and invite in structured and well thought out responses from readers of opposing beliefs. Why is it then that unbiased news websites are so scarce? Simply put, some people don’t want unbiased news websites websites. They don’t see the need for them when they feel like Fox News does the job well enough. The difference between sites like Fox News and CCN and, for the most part, unbiased news websites like BBC and The Real News is that the former two report news stories, the latter, however, try to simply report the news. There’s a reason why a news story is called a story. News stories are out there for the sole purpose of drawing a crowd and gaining an audience. It’s easier to get someone to listen to what you’re saying when you have a storyline attached to it. Mere facts, however, are harder to make interesting without the help of some bias. That is why unbiased news websites are harder to come by. Facts can be boring. People don’t want boring. We live in a society where people want and need to be entertained. Can unbiased news websites be entertaining as well? Is it possible for unbiased news websites to write news stories but refrain from adding in any bias? In short, yes. The real question is if people are willing to absorb that information and actually form their own opinions. If we want to see more unbiased news websites and more unbiased news reported, we have to demand it. Right now, news outlets are supplying what the public is demanding; and it seems that the demand is for more entertaining, biased news. Unbiased news websites are scarce but they’re out there and they will continue to report nothing but the facts as long as they have the funding to do so.
