Cooking is a skill that gets better the more you use it. Even seasoned cooks can benefit from learning new tips that will make them enjoy cooking more. Novice cooks must learn a few basic skills before undertaking a major culinary project. Read on for some tips that can help you improve your cooking adventures.

When not in use, put your spices in an area that receives the lowest amount of light and heat. The shelf life of spices is greatly reduced if they are exposed to heat, humidity, or light. Spices stored in a cool, dark location will taste better and last longer. Your food will be even more delicious if your spices are fresher.

If you're making a recipe with seasoned meat, sample a small piece of the meat before cooking the rest of it. A lot of foods require you to season them carefully; for instance meatloaf, hamburgers or meatballs. After adding your blend of seasonings, do not cook the entire portion of meat. Cook a tiny portion of it in the shape of a patty first. The aroma of the food as it cooks will also give you a clue to the amount of seasoning you need to add.

Boiling and other long preparation methods tend to eliminate key nutrients in vegetables. To preserve their healthy reputation, choose quick cooking methods such as sauteing or steaming - or better still, enjoy them in their natural, raw state.

Many apples are purchased for cooking in winter and fall, but they will rot in a short period of time if they are not properly stored. To avoid rotting, store apples in open-mesh bags or baskets in a cool basement or in the produce drawer of your refrigerator. One rotten apple can actually spoil the whole bag so make sure you keep an eye your apples.

Raw potatoes should rest in chilly water for approximately 30 minutes. This will help them to be crispy and delicious. Doing this increases the strength of the fiber in the potatoes, which means that they don't break down as quickly during the deep frying phase.

Would you like to cook with fresh basil? Put a bunch of fresh basil in a glass. Then, add water to the glass, immersing the stems in water. It will remain fresh for weeks, just sitting on the kitchen counter! In fact, if you periodically freshen the water, the herb may even sprout roots. Plant the fresh basil in a small pot with rich soil to have fresh basil available at all times.

If you want to lose weight and eat healthier, cut back on the amout of oil that you cook with. These types of foods contain many unnecessary fats you can live without. Try cooking with a cooking spray so that you will use less oil but the same effect.

This way, the fruits will stay fresh all year long. In addition, it will allow you to eat fruits that are not currently in season when you crave them.

If serving salad, keep the dressing on the side, rather than pouring it on the salad. Certain people prefer a larger amount of dressing on the salad than others. Because of this fact, you should allow people to pour dressing on their own. Make sure you have a wide selection of dressings to choose from as well.

You need to stay organized when you are cooking, so that you can be sure the food is as great as it can be and that nothing burns. A cooking station that is well-organized is more productive. If you aren't organized, you will start to forget what you buy and that will make you spend too much money that could have been spent on something you would have eaten.

When you make boxed mac and cheese, closely follow the directions. This way, your macaroni will turn out perfectly every time and will taste great with the cheese melted over the top. Serving this dish can be enhanced by using a simple spoon with a solid face. Pepper up your macaroni for some spice and extra taste sensation.

Even cooks with years of experience continue to learn ways to improve their cooking and technique. New cooks should prepare for failure and be confident in their successes. Try these tips and see if you have a new love of cooking.
