Many physicians are wondering how the Health Insurance Exchange is going to affect their practice. Starting October 1st, 2013, qualified U.S. residents will be able to start enrolling for insurance participation through the Health Insurance Exchange. Their coverage will begin as early as January 1, 2014. So what does this mean to physicians across the U.S.? It means that there will be an influx of new patients coming to your practice that were previously uninsured and now required to secure health insurance for themselves and their family. Each state will have anywhere from 250,000 to 5 million residents eligible to secure insurance through the Health Insurance Exchange. Each state is required to select a minimum of two insurance plans to provide as options to their state residents. It will be important to know which insurance plans your state and any close neighboring states choose to offer and then monitor the selection frequently for any changes to the selected carriers. We are recommending to our clients that they credential with their state selected plans, as there will be a large amount of their existing and new patient population seeking care under the plans associated with their state Health Insurance Exchange. Here is a sample list of some of the states and the insurance plans that have either applied and/or have gone through preliminary approvals. An official list will be published closer to October 1st, 2013. If your state is not represented on our list, please feel free to e-mail us at info@mbs-inc.com to receive a list of your state plans.
