8 Keys to Success for Handicapped Travel to Athens By Sage Traveling

Travel & Tourism
Handicapped Travel to Athens offers numerous sightseeing opportunities that can be tackled in a number of ways. Stick to these 8 Keys to Success to ensure that your trip to Athens is great accessible experience.

Take an accessible walking tour – A walking tour in Athens is a great way to see the ruins and hear about the fascinating history of the Greeks. There are several wheelchair accessible tour routes that you can choose. Sightseeing options include the Temple of Olympian Zeus, Syntagma Square, the Plaka neighborhood, and even the Parthenon on top of the Acropolis. Be sure that you confirm before your handicapped travel to Athens that the tour route meets your accessibility needs. Many have long routes, steep hills, and/or cobblestones.

Visit the Acropolis – The Acropolis is one of the most famous images in the world and disabled tourists don’t have to miss it! An elevator is available for wheelchair users and other disabled visitors. The official policy is that you need to notify them in advance that you need to use the elevator, but you may be able to show up and use it without advanced notice.

Don’t miss the Ancient Agora – Although the Acropolis is far more famous, the Ancient Agora is actually better in many respects. The Acropolis has been stripped of its artifacts over the centuries and there’s almost nothing left on top of the Acropolis except the Parthenon (you’ll have to go to accessible British Museum in London to see the Elgin Marbles). The Ancient Agora, on the other hand, is located just below the Acropolis and has numerous artifacts lying on the ground that Athens handicapped travelers can walk/roll between. Be sure to visit it!

Have dinner in the Plaka neighborhood – The most charming of all the neighborhoods in Athens is the Plaka neighborhood. Although it has some steep streets on the south side of the neighborhood, much of it is wheelchair friendly. Wheelchair users should choose a restaurant with outdoor seating or one with no step at the entrance.

Visit Syntagma Square – Located directly in front of Parliament, Syntagma Square is where the riots happened in 2010 and 2011. Fear not though, normally it’s a charming area that has some accessible restaurants lining it.

Visit the excellent museums – Many tourists have a dream to get to the top of the Acropolis, but forget that all of the historical artifacts found on top of the Acropolis and at other Greek ruins are now stored in museums. At a minimum, handicapped travel to Athens should include the National Archaeological Museum, the Cycladic Art Museum, and the Byzantine and Christian Museum. The New Acropolis Museum is the most conveniently located, but it pales in comparison to the National Archaeological Museum.

Witness the changing of the guard at Parliament – Of course it’s different than the Changing of the Guard at the Parliament in London but it’s nevertheless a ceremony worth seeing. Schedule your time so that you can view of the ceremonies. Some of the accessible walking tours include it in their itinerary.

Greek Island Travel – For many disabled visitors toAthens, a stop in the capital city is just a gateway to the beautiful scenery on the water. Take a trip to one of thewheelchair accessible islands in Greeceto experience the more traditional Greek lifestyle!
