People who own a stud farm are very cautious about the health of their horses. They maintain a good 24*7 staff to take care of the animals and try to provide them with the best fodder. Now, when we think about good horse fodder, hay is perhaps the most common thing that comes in our mind. Horses love the mowed grass and it is also very nutritious for them. While you can easily buy the best hay for your horses, storing it is a major concern. You want your horse hay to be well protected against mold, mildew, rodents and weather. Here are a few tips that will help you in properly storing the hay, so that it does not get ruined:- • Keep hay dry and covered: If you are storing horse hay outside, it is essential to keep it properly covered by tarpaulin covers. This is a must to protect hay from rain, wind and sun. Rain drenches the bales in water, which can cause it to stale; wind can blow away the fodder; and too much direct sunlight can cause rapid nutrient loss from the fodder. It is also very necessary that you keep the cured grass dry, as moisture ruins them. To ensure this you should buy only high quality tarp, and regularly check them for any leaks or holes. • Stacking in round bales: Though, you can stack the hay bales in any shape, but stacking hay in round bales help to cover them better. This is because round bales, unlike square or any other shape bales, don’t have any edges. • Keep hay off the floor/ground: You should not only cover the fodder from above, but also keep it away from the ground/floor. For this you can try using wooden pallets, which are readily available and are usually very cheap. This allows proper ventilation in the processed fodder, and prevents it from degrading. • Keep away the rodents: The cost of good hay bales is usually very high, but people buy them because they want to offer the best to their beloved animals. But, no one wants their costly fodder to eaten by rodents, instead. So, it is recommended that you have some cats in your farm, to eliminate rats and other rodents. • Smart usage: You should try to use the hays smartly. Stalking hay bales according to their age is a nice option. This allows you to feed the old bales to your horses first, before you switch to the newer bales. This will save the old fodder from rotting.
