SINGAPORE: They have been regional kingpins since the SoutheastAsia (SEA) Peninsular Games in 1965. Now, Singapore's national men's waterpolo team have set theirsights on dominating the inaugural SEA Swimming Championships (May28 to June 17) to get the hosts' gold medal hunt going with themen's under-23 and women's waterpolo programme from May 28 to June1. Only captain Loh Zhi Zhi and Koh Jian Ying from last year's13-strong SEA Games gold-medal-winning squad will feature in thismeet, where they will face Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. But securing the gold in front of an expectant home crowd at theToa Payoh Swimming Complex remains the No 1 task. "We're definitely looking forward to having our family and friendscatch us in action," said Loh, 22. "There's definitely pressure and a lot of expectations because wealways perform at the SEA Games. I'm confident we will do well and,barring any surprises, will get a good result. "We want to give Singapore a good start to the championships andstart our own tradition here and not just at the SEA Games. Thiswill also be preparation for the Asian Championships at the end ofthe year for us." With a roster of players aged between 16 and 22, the men's team -coached by Lee Sai Meng - also spent eight days competing in theAll-China League last month, finishing sixth out of 11 teams. Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) student Sean Ang - the youngestmember of the team at 16 - will be looking to keep his nerves incheck when they face Thailand in their first match next Monday. "There's pressure as I'm the youngest, so I'm trying not to thinkabout what will happen if I don't do well. But this is a chance toget international competitions and I hope to get into the nationalteam in the future," said the national under-19 player. Similarly, Singapore's women's team are also tipped to win the goldahead of Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines afterclinching the SEA Games gold in Palembang last year. Team manager David Tan said only six from the SEA Games squad willcompete this time to give the younger athletes more competitionexposure. Organised by the Singapore Swimming Association, the SEA SwimmingChampionships will see some 300 athletes from 10 countriescompeting in waterpolo, diving (June 9 to 11), synchronisedswimming (June 15 to 17) and swimming (June 13 to 17). - TODAY.
