The age old academic feud, that will constantly cause problems and headaches for everyone caught in the crossfire. When the ministries of education from all around the world came up with the concept of part time degrees, they might not of have been wise enough to take this feud into consideration, or maybe they have, but it all boils down to the level of determination that each individual has. But what is this feud about? Let’s look at both sides and what they stand for. The full time degree is the degree that is gained while in your youth, as a result of full time studies. Access into fields like medicine, law, physics, etc. is obtained exclusively through full time degree courses, because of the sheer amount of information and the practice that goes into them. Part time degrees are usually obtained for lesser fields of activity, and they are gained usually by middle-aged people or your people that have decided to change fields while working. Another common example of part time degrees, are the ones where an individual is studying for an advanced degree in the field that he is currently working in, especially if he or she is angling a better position. What about the interview? Oh yes, the point where the two usually meet. Let’s say that an accounting position has opened at a very important company, and the 2 candidates that show up are equally good in the field, however, one of them has a full time degree, and one has a part time degree. Let the battle begin. It would be unfair to both sides to claim that one is actually better than the other, however most employers would rather go with the full time degree because of the fact that the person wielding it is usually younger, and has more experience in that field. However some are actually hoping that a person will come along that has a part time degree in the field that they offer. That is because of the fact that the person with the part time degree might have less experience in this field, but also has some experience in other fields. Although this might be hard to take in at first, but that extra experience in more fields is very valuable at certain points in a career. One good argument for this is the fact that such a person is more unlikely to be fooled or scammed, because he already knows the ropes in another field and can easily deflect any attempt. Don’t get me wrong, full time degrees are valuable and can outrank a lot of things, but part time degrees are just as good, and if the person wielding it comes with a lot of stamina and willingness to work in that field, then by all means it is just as good as the full time degree. The full time degree versus part time degree feud will go on for centuries to come, and it will always boil down to who wants that field the most. So don’t worry about your part time degree, and focus more on obtaining the job that you want and doing a really good job at it.
