Grave monuments, since they are exposed to the elements, often are damaged due to environmental conditions. Many early monuments are made from soft marble or limestone and are particularly vulnerable to erosion, algae and mold. Also, the information on monuments is usually carved into the stone, thus the lettering can fill with dirt and grime and become hard to read. To control harmful organic growth, maintain appearance and keep the monument's information readable, periodic cleaning is necessary. Instructions as follows: Firstly, prune overgrown ornamental plants from around the monuments. Do not allow plants (particularly ivy) to grow on the monument. Secondly, remove plant material from monument surfaces. To avoid breaking off chunks of the stone, pull or scrape plant material gently. Seek advice from a conservator before using any herbicides. Depending on the material used for the monument, herbicides may damage the monument. Thirdly, dry-brush or scrape away loose debris. Be sure to use brushes and scrapers that are softer than the material of the monument. Work from the bottom of the monument to the top. Do not brush the monument if it has a flaky surface or if brushing will remove monument material (i.e., stone). Fourthly, wet the monument with clean running water using a regular hose. Do not use high pressure hoses as the water pressure will etch the garden stone. The Chicora Foundation recommends not cleaning the monument if running water is not available. A great deal of water is required for proper cleaning. If no tap is present, use a water truck or large tank. Fifthly, brush the monument again with a clean and wet soft-bristled brush. Rinse the brush often with clean water to avoid brushing grit and other material back onto the monument. Sixthly, use a weak solution of nonionic detergent, such as Orvus Paste Soap, if dirt and grime are particularly tough. Avoid bleach and other harsh cleaning solutions. Orvus can be purchased from conservation supply stores. You can also purchase it in bulk from livestock supply stores as it is often used for "shampooing" livestock. Seventhly, use D/2 Architectural Antimicrobial to remove stubborn algae or mold. D/2 can be purchased from architectural supply stores and retailers that specialize in stone care and cleaning. Apply this solution after a basic cleaning of the peculiar stone. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations for the product. Eighthly, prepare the D/2 solution by mixing it with water. It is diluted according to the stubbornness of the algae or mold. Undiluted D/2 can be used for particularly bad problem areas. Ninthly, wet the monument again with clean water. Tenthly, use a brush, roller or sprayer to apply the D/2 solution. Scrub the monument's surface with a clean, soft-bristled brush. Let the solution work for a few minutes, then mist the surface with clean water and lightly brush again. Finally, let me have a short conclusion.
