This examination is considered the toughest examination throughout the country people who are able to clear it fill prestigious posts like IAS (Indian Administrative Service), IPS (Indian Police Service), IFS (Indian Foreign Service), IRS (Indian Revenue Service) and many other union government services. There is a proper pattern which is followed during the conduction if this examination. This Indian Administrative Service examination is conducted in three phases.

The first phase is the CSAT that is Civil Services Aptitude Test which is conducted in the month of May or June. The second phase which is to be faced is the Mains or may be called Civil Services Mains and these are conducted in the month of October or November. The final phase which a candidate goes through is the Interview or the Personality Test and this takes place between February and March.

The preliminary examination has a prescribed pattern and a course content that should be followed. This includes,

Paper I which is of 200 marks and its duration is two hours includes

• Current events of national and international importance. • History of India and Indian National Movement. • Indian and World Geography - Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World. • Indian Polity and Governance - Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc. • Economic and Social Development Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector initiatives, etc. • General issues on Environmental Ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change - that do not require subject specialization. • General Science.

Paper II which is of 200 marks and its duration is two hours includes

• Comprehension • Interpersonal skills including communication skills • Logical reasoning and analytical ability • Decision-making and problem-solving • General mental ability • Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc.) (Class X level), Data • interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc. - Class X level) • English Language Comprehension skills (Class X level).

The second stage which includes the Mains and the Interview has written examination that consists of nine papers which includes Indian language and English each of 300 marks in the first paper the second paper includes essay writing which is of 250 words. Then the next paper is general studies-1 which is based on Indian Heritage, History and Geography of the world and society and this paper is of 250 marks. The next paper is general studies-2 which is based on Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice and International Relations. The following paper which is general studies-3 includes Technology, Economic Development, Bio-Diversity, Environment, Security and Disaster management. The next paper which is general studies-4 includes Ethics, Integrity and Aptitude. The last two papers are the optional subject papers and their subject topics are Agriculture ; Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science ; Anthropology ; Botany ; Chemistry ; Civil Engineering ; Commerce and Accountancy ; Economics ; Electrical Engineering ; Geography ; Geology ;History ; Law ; Management; Mathematics ; Mechanical Engineering ; Medical Science ; Philosophy ; Physics ; Political Science and International Relations ; Psychology ;Public Administration ;Sociology ;Statistics and Zoology and the option for literature languages are Assamese, Bengali, Bodo, Dogri, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkani, Maithili, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Nepali, Oriya, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Santhali, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu, English.

Understanding the course content of the examination is not enough, a candidate must understand the eligibility criteria before he apply for IAS examination. This eligibility criteria includes education qualification, age qualification and attempts limit. The criteria of education qualification includes a degree holder (or degree final year students who can get the degree by July of the exam year) from any recognized University in any discipline with any percentage is eligible to apply for this position. The next criteria of age qualification includes general category candidate who have attained the age of 21 years and must not have attained the age of 30 years on 1st August of the exam year. OBC/SC/ST/PH category candidates are avail age relaxation. The final and the last criteria which a candidate needs to look upon is attempt limit and this says that a general category candidates can attempt the exams up to 4 times (applying and not appearing for any paper does not count as an attempt, appearing for one or more papers count as an attempt). OBC/PH category candidates can attempt the exams up to 7 times and SC/ST candidates can attempt any number of times as long as their age limit is within the eligibility range.

Before appearing and applying for the post of Indian Administrative Service officer if a student understands the examination pattern clearly then cracking this examination and passing through it becomes much easier.
