Cutting a Cigar

Hobbies
You have chosen a dark maduro cigar from your humidor for some quality time on your own. This is your moment of pleasure but you can still ruin it by over-cutting your cigar.

The knowledge of how to smoke cigars is almost as vital as the knowledge of how to store them. One important part is cutting the cigar. The right place to cut depends on the cigar. Parejos and Figurados differ a bit. You have to closely examine the head of the cigar and see where the cap ends. The cap is the part of the cigar that keeps everything in place. You have to be cautious not to cut beyond the cap of the cigar, wherever the cap ends you should regard as your limit as to how far down you should cut. You will see the end of the cap by looking for the tiny line where that tobacco ends. On a Parejo cigar you usually find this line at 1/4"-3/8". This means that you sometimes need a thin cut, while other times you may need a large cut. For Figurados you may have to cut more in order to open the head enough for an appropriate draw. Many smoke Figurados because they like how the tapering ring concentrates the smoke against the palate. Figurados rarely unravel so the cut is really a judgment call. It is a good idea to cut less at first and then recut if you want a more open draw from your cigar.

Tools for cutting a cigar

Once you find the spot for the cut, you need the right tool to do this well. The sharper the better is something to keep in mind. Otherwise you will end up crushing the head of your cigar, and fill your mouth with tobacco. You can choose from several styles of cutters today.

Single-bladed guillotine cutters

Guillotine cutters are maybe the best options for cutting a cigar. When using a single-bladed guillotine cutter, the cigar must be placed as far from the blade as possible. The blade should then be brought through the cigar quickly.

Double-bladed guillotine cutters

The double blade guillotine cutter works like the single blade cutter, but normally with more precision and a cleaner cut. The double-bladed cutter is cutting simultaneously from both sides, and minimizes the risk of pinching the cigar.

Cigar Scissors

Cigar Scissors have an elegant and sophisticated look. They work by cutting off the cap, much like the double-bladed guillotine cutter. Cigar scissors can provide very clean cuts, but you need the best pair of scissors.

Punch cutter

Punch cutters are very easy to use. They simply punch a small hole on the head of the cigar. It has the advantage that you can carry it on you keychain. It is not ideal for bigger-ring cigars.

V-cutter

The V-cutter makes a V-shaped notch in your cigar cap when it makes the cut. The increased surface area allows you to draw more air through the cigar. The V-cutter is preferably used for smaller-ring cigars.

To own a quality cigar cutter is a smart investment. Bad cutters will ruin your precious cigars.
