Stairs are tricky, there's no use denying it. It's amazing how they seem to grow the faster you try to ascend them. At least when you fall up them, though, it's a short enough distance you can catch yourself with your hands with little harm to anything but your pride. Falling down stairs, on the other hand, can lead to serious injury, broken bones, or if you're an ancillary TV character, death. While nothing can properly account for lack of foot/eye coordination, some non-slip stair treads could go a long way to preventing injuries or lawsuits. Particularly if you have a staircase frequented by senior citizens, or assistants running around delivering coffee, you'll want to take this little extra precaution. You can choose from nosings or treads. Nosings may sound like the result of falling down stairs, but they're actually just a cover for the stair that adds some traction by affixing abrasives to sturdy aluminum. They frequently curve over the lip of the stair and can come in a variety of colors to maintain the pleasing aesthetics you worked so hard to create. They also come in a multitude of materials to accommodate different levels of traffic. Treads tend to look a little less fancy, but they get the job done. Often consisting of a rubbery appearing material, they make potential climbers aware of where the step is. A common addition to treads is a glow line that absorbs light and glows in the dark when the lights are turned off. You could always plant a large sign by your staircase that admonishes Grandma to beware, as she descends at her own risk, but that may be considered tacky in some circles.
