Look Forward To The Best Tourist Places in Delhi

Travel & Tourism
As a city Delhi assumes much importance because it is the capital of the country, the seat of the country’s political power. It is also an important tourist destination. Architecturally magnificent monuments, forts, tombs and mosques which dot the city are a reminder of Delhi’s rich history and heritage. Every year tourists from within the country and oversees come to Delhi to witness history unfold in these monuments and ruins.

There are many tourist places in Delhi but a visit to the city is incomplete till you have been to the following tourist spots:

1>Red Fort: It is Delhi's most famous monument. The Red Fort was built in 1638 when Mughal emperor Shah Jahan decided to shift his capital from Agra to Delhi. The fort suffered large-scale demolition during the British occupation but its important structures have survived. Every evening a one hour sound and light show is staged in the fort to narrate the history of the fort.

2>Jama Masjid: It is the largest mosque in the country. It was built during Mughal emperor Shah Jahan’s reign and it took 13 years for the mosque to be completed. The courtyard can hold about 25,000 devotees.

3>Humayan’s Tomb: It was built by Humayun's widow, Hamida Banu Begum. Humayun’s Tomb was designed by a Persian architect named Mirak Mirza Ghiya. Work on the tomb started in 1562 and it was finally completed in 1565. The tomb set a standard for all Mughal monuments. Its design even inspired the design of the Taj Mahal.

4>India Gate: While in Delhi you cannot miss the India Gate. It is a war memorial built in memory of the Indian soldiers who lost their lives fighting for the British Army in World War I. As evening creeps in, families and tourists crowd at the India Gate. In recent times, people protesting against corruption and crime against women in the capital had staged their protests at India Gate. Chandni Chowk: Chandni Chowk in Old Delhi is one of the oldest and busiest markets in the country. Visit Chandni Chowk for inexpensive electronic goods, jewellery and clothes and to also taste Delhi’s awesome street food.
