Cleanrooms are controlled environments designed to be kept incredibly clean. This means keeping harmful particulates out of the room using a variety of different methods. One method that is quite affordable and used by cleanrooms around the world is the use of sticky or tacky mats. These mats are placed outside the entries into cleanrooms and are specifically designed to catch particulates on cleanroom workers’ shoes and prevent them from entering the cleanroom. There are a few different kinds of sticky mats, but one of the most popular mats consists of many different sheets, similar in concept to a pad of paper. These layers are numbered in the corner and must be changed periodically. Changing a layer simply involves peeling off a layer to reveal a new and clean layer underneath. Although cleanrooms and mats vary in size, most cleanroom mats should be able to accommodate about three steps on the mat which is usually enough to remove most particulates. Cleanroom standards are highly important due to the operations conducted within the room, and one of the biggest contributors of particulates to these controlled environments is the actual cleanroom operators. People are constant shedding particulates through things like dead skin cells, hair and spittle, and using sticky mats is one of many ways to fight particulates and keep these rooms clean.
