London-based Hypertac has been steadily miniaturising theHyperboloid contact technology and this year will introduce a rangeof standard product RF coaxial connectors. The company has been building its reputation in high speed dataand RF interconnect technologies, said Bill Henderson, businessdevelopment director at the company. This has been made possible byminiaturisation of the firm s proprietary Hyperboloid socket,which provides high reliability and low resistance contacts. Hypertac initially used the technology in power connectors with23mm socket diameter. It has progressively reduced socket size tocreate a 0.3mm diameter socket which makes the technology suitablefor high speed data and RF connectors. We will launch a new RF capability this year, said Henderson. The high reliability ball and socket technology has mainly beenused in military and aerospace connector designs. Over half ofHypertac s products are custom connector designs. According to Henderson, the company will now introduce thetechnology into new applications with a range of standard parts.Target markets are medical, transportation, electric vehicles andcommunications. Electric vehicle connectors for the motor drivesystems is an area which can benefit from the inherently lowcontact resistance of the socket, said Henderson. Electric vehicles rely on motors which can approach the performanceof their internal combustion engine predecessors in terms ofacceleration, speed and distance. To achieve this the motorsrequire high levels of current and efficient electricaldistribution systems. The company already supplies off-the-shelf connectors that meet therequirements of connecting test equipment to these high currentsystems. Hypertac s single pole HBC series connector based on theHyperboloid contact is designed to meet the protection level IP2xand is available in 300A and 500A versions. The connector must beable to transmit very high current levels with very low voltagedrops to achieve the required efficiencies, in addition to size andweight restrictions. Henderson believes the design of the Hyperboloid connector wins onboth counts. The technology addresses one of the largest causes offailure in electrical connectors: contact erosion. The design of the Hyperboloid does not rely on a single metalcontact but is constructed from a series of plated wires configuredaccurately inside the socket. Wires run the full length of thesocket, so offer high contact reliability and low resistance.Controlling the number, diameter and position of the wiresdetermines the contact resistance and insertion force. It requires a precision assembly process which has limited its useto higher cost military and aerospace connectors. But Hendersonsaid the company is now in a position to use the same technique instandard product connectors for commercial applications. The company also has plans for a combination connector withinternal circuit protection. The RF expertise came from a sistercompany within the Smiths Interconnect group, Sabritec.
