Do you live in an older property and keep finding that your lights or power circuits keep blowing at regular intervals? It could be that you find the lights seemingly going out for no reason at all. Or do you get home to find a power circuit's gone off, possibly leaving you with no power to your refrigerator or freezer? Often such electrical faults can be absolutely infuriating to trace. It could be a light bulb blowing and taking out the lighting circuit, or it could be something connected to a power circuit that is causing an electrical overload. The problem is if this happens and you have an old fuse board as the distribution board for your power, then you can find yourself having to replace the fuse wire in order to get the power back on. The problem is that if the problem that caused the power to blow the fuse still exists, then when you plug the new fuse back in it will most likely blow again, causing you extreme frustration to say the very least. This can mean that tracking down the fault can prove to be particularly time consuming if you keep having to replace the fuse wire each time you want to test the circuit again. However the solution to you being left in the dark is relatively simple, and that is to replace your old fuse board with a modern unit such as an MK consumer unit or a similar manufacturer, which is fitted with RCD (Residual Current Detector) switches instead of fuses. This is because RCDs when tripped out can be instantly reset simply by flicking the switch back up. This also means that they make testing the circuit much easier. The key advantage to you as a consumer is that by fitting a new consumer unit, that for 99% of the faults such as a light circuit tripping out when a bulb blows, when you reset the RCD it will not trip out again. You will spot the bulb that has blown and replace it, all without the expense of calling an electrician out to fix the fault. So if you are having problems with your old fuse board then by fitting one of the new style consumer units, then we can safely say that you are never going to have to use fuse wire ever again, and the overall electrical safety of your property will also have been vastly increased as RCDs also trip out in milliseconds preventing electric shocks in the event of a major electrical fault.
