Nova Scotia now has something in common with Chateauneuf du Pape,Bordeaux and Burgundy — Tidal Bay, a wine appellation thatidentifies the province"s unique terroir. "If you"ve tasted a Chianti or a Chateauneuf du Pape ora Chablis or a Burgundy or a Bordeaux, those areappellations," said Ontario-based international wineconsultant Peter Gamble in an interview Monday at the 2012 AtlanticCanada Wine Symposium in Halifax. He helped establish the Tidal Baystandard that was officially launched on Monday. "They are wine regions around the world (that) define whatthey do best," said Gamble, who helped establish the VintnersQuality Alliance standard in Ontario and consulted on thedevelopment of the critically acclaimed Benjamin Bridge traditionalmethod sparkling wines made in the Gaspereau Valley, outsideWolfville. What do you think of Nova Scotia wine? Gamble said the Tidal Bay appellation, which is only granted toNova Scotia white wines made from specific grape varieties thatmeet stringent production standards, provides consumers with theassurance that they are getting the best and most representativewines the province has to offer. "The Nova Scotia terroir (its combination of soil andclimate), for me, is, (along) with the northern German regions andmaybe the odd spot in Chile for reds, probably the most dramaticterroir of any wine region in the world." He said the name Tidal Bay reflects the influence of the seasurrounding the province on that unique terroir. "You can smell it and say, whoa, this is Nova Scotia; it hasthese tremendous characteristics," he said."We"re looking at fresh, crisp and bright as threereally important ones." Those characteristics are judged by an independent tasting panel todetermine which wines qualify for the Tidal Bay appellationstandard. Eleven of the province"s 14 wineries offer a Tidal Bay wine, including Domaine de Grand Pre in Grand Pre, whose 2012 Tidal Baywon a gold medal at the 2012 All Canadian Wine Championships. Grand Pre winemaker Jurg Stutz said the Tidal Bay appellation givesthe provincial wine industry credibility. "It"s a fantastic idea," he said in an interviewat the symposium, where he was sampling Grand Pre wines for themore than 200 industry professionals in attendance. "It"s a great tool to promote the local industry, especially outside the province." Mike Mainguy, executive winemaker at Luckett Vineyards in theGaspereau Valley, which also produces a Tidal Bay wine, agreed thatthe appellation was an important development for theprovince"s wine industry. "I think it"s a really good move for the industry as awhole," he said in an interview at the symposium. "Itgives us something that is unique to our area and puts us insimilar runnings with other regions around the world." Gamble said having an appellation should also help grow theprovincial wine industry, which is worth an estimated $10 millionannually. "The initial one, especially, is the lifeblood of theindustry," he said. "It"s the one where you canget consumers (saying) that all I have to know is two words —Tidal Bay — and be able to confidently buy this. That"swhat we"ve tried to do." Gamble noted that the fresh, fruity characteristics of Nova Scotiawhite wines mesh nicely with a global move away from heavily oakedwhite wines popularized in California and Australia. "This movement is precisely where the world is moving in wineflavours," he said. "The big, heavy, dominant softCalifornia surfboard Chardonnays are really going by thewayside." About 200 hectares of land in Nova Scotia is currently devoted towinemaking, said Christine White of the Winery Association of NovaScotia. The industry, which has doubled in size in the past five years, hasset a goal of having 20 wineries operating in Nova Scotia by 2020,with 400 hectares of vineyards under cultivation. The symposium, which included more than 35 workshops andpresentations, was organized by winery operators, grape growers andindustry professionals from the four Atlantic provinces.
