Children today tend to see school and learning as a chore – something that they really do not want to do but have to. They would rather spend time at home with their friends playing video games or surfing on the Internet. So think about the following – why not combine learning with the Internet? This idea has been criticised left, right and centre. But it has been proven that giving resources for children and teenagers to access online has been a great success and it is seen as a revelation in modern day teaching. Schools actively promote the use of the Internet for their students – either as a way of giving homework or as a revision tool. Websites like BBC BiteSize, MyMaths and SumDog are used as a way for children to work through Maths problems and practice any methods they have been learning through school – as that is the only way to master any arithmetic technique: practice. SumDog is a great example of how the Internet is useful for helping young children to develop their Maths skills through games and activities – which are educational in nature AND fun for kids who use it. That’s right – solid proof that learning can actually be fun! However, it isn’t just about providing a space to practice outside the classroom. Giving Maths assignments to do online through these websites relaxes the idea of homework being a boring pen and paper job. Because it is on the computer, it automatically makes children and teenagers less reluctant to do the work. Most academic subjects can’t offer this – like English or History. But because Maths requires one answer and one answer only – it is possible to make these assignments easy to access and complete as well as providing incentives through the website in the form of downloads or better access to the available resources. Rich Maths goes one step further and rewards the learner for each question successfully answered, or each learning video watched. One thing that is a pet hate for all students is how long it can take teachers to mark work. Using online websites like MyMaths and BiteSize is a great thing to counteract this problem because students get an immediate result for their work – along with multiple explanations to consider how they went wrong. This immediate feedback system is fantastic in the students’ eyes because there is no waiting on teachers to get back to them and, therefore, a more immediate sense of completion and satisfaction. This method has been praised so highly that even universities use this sort of system in some modules to help the staff as well as the students. So, as you can see, there are so many positives behind how kids can have fun through online Maths – from the actual content and structure of the work, to the immediate feedback students get instead of having to wait for teachers to get back to them. It also makes the work more accessible and, consequently, less of a strain on the student who in the past might have lost or misplaced a homework sheet. I can only advise us all to embrace this unique opportunity and use it to its full potential. Liam Hoy is a tutor for Rich Maths, the new online way to motivate children to learn Maths.
