Finest Places in and Nearby Ooty

Travel & Tourism

Ooty, originally known as Ootacamund, is the abode of lofty blue mountains, sprawling grasslands, grand lakes and lush tea gardens. The pristine wintry atmosphere and greenery of Ooty makes it a perfect spot for enjoying a picnic with your family.

Ooty is well connected to Chennai and Mettupalayam via the nightly train service, known as the Nilgiri express. This train service is provided by the Nilgiri Mountain Service, which is now one of the world heritage sites. There are several exotic places to visit in Ooty that give an unforgettable and mesmerizing experience, inspiring one to come again and again.

Most of all the attractions can be better explored with the help of an Ooty travel guide.

Botanical garden

This garden perches on the peaks of Dodabetta. Spreading over an area of 55 acres, this garden was laid by Marquis of Tweedale in 1847. Strolling down the dense green lawns, housing large varieties of orchids, flowers and trees is a rich treat indeed. The garden has been divided into five sections: the lower garden, new garden, nursery and Italian garden. The annual flower show held in the month of May, featuring some of the rare varieties of flora, makes the Botanical gardens as one of the most attractive places to visit in Ooty.

Ooty Lake

The lake and boat house in Ooty stand out to be the prime attractions that draw the attention of tourists every year. It is one of the most exquisite places to visit in Ooty. John Sullivan, the then collector of Ooty, had constructed this artificial lake with the intention of initially building an irrigation tank. The lake stretches for more than 2kms and has an irregular L shaped design with variations throughout the width. The lake is also famous for the boat races and boat pageantry in summer, and subject to permission from the authorities small scale fishing is also allowed.

Doddabetta peak

Doddabetta peak, located 2623 km above the sea level, gives a spectacular view of the whole city with surrounding plains adding charm to the scene. The tourism board of Ooty runs a telescope house that bestows spectacular picture of the landscape and a restaurant that caters to the needs of all tourists.

A trip to Ooty can be made more comfortable if one carries an Ooty travel guide along, as it provides good knowledge about the famous spots.

Apart from the above said sites, there are various places to visit near Ooty that attract the attention of numerous tourists all around the year.
