I will remember the look of horror on his face for a long time. Hewas shaking his head and repeating the faecal word in scything lowtones. I was driving a Luxembourg -registered Dacia Duster. Dacia is a Romanian brand (now owned by Renault ) and the Duster is the car that is pitching prices around€8,000 below its perceived rivals. But the pleasant man who so often lets me into the Ripley Courthotel car park on Talbot Street (before I sometimes succumb totemptation and waddle into their cafe for the best curry chips intown) was adamant. He's from Romania and he wouldn't touch a Dacia.Nor would his equally nice colleague. Reasonable, affable, helpful, courteous men both. I was taken abackat their insistence. Then late one evening I took it in my head tomake a Duster trail to the midlands and see what the cousinthought. It was one of those miserable wet interludes we've had and Iploughed through the wind and rain at a fair rate of knots. I was surprised at how stable and solidit felt under poor conditions. But I kept my counsel. Those wordsfrom Romania still echoed in my head. We didn't even wait for the tea when I arrived (in fairness I had alarger than usual barrowload of those scrumptious curry chipsearlier) and set off on a wonky enough old road to try out theDuster: himself in the front and the tall elegant lady in the back. She said she had plenty of room; he made disparaging remarks aboutmy treatment of the poor ould car -- I didn't spare engine, tyresor chassis. And then we had lovely currant cakes with butter andjam, and a few chocolate fingers. They really liked the Duster and thought it a genuine option foranyone looking for a new/newer car for €15,000 or so. And there you have the two sides of the story so far (mine has yetto come): one unflattering based on historical experience; theother impressed on recent acquaintance. They encapsulate the mixedemotions -- and the challenge -- about a family crossover thatofficially goes on sale later this year. Price is everything with this. The one I had was top-of-the-rangeso it had air con (which didn't keep out fumes from other cars, though), four-wheel drive (most have two-wheel) electric windows,Bluetooth, leather seats and upholstery (yes and fair good quality, too). It will cost you in the region of €20,000-plus. But thebasic car will have less and cost €14,990. There are two spec levels, Alternative and Signature; the two-wheeldrive version will be in most demand. The diesel engine (1.5-litre, 110bhp) we know from Renault and Nissan . It had no trouble at all shifting this fairly bulky body -- theDuster's I mean, not mine. For the moment there will be nine dedicated Dacia dealers attachedto, but independent of, Renault garages. Back in the old days the name was synonymous with. . . well mynice Romanian friend had a word for it I can't use in a familynewspaper. But it re-emerged in 2004 and Dacia models, underpinned by Renault, have done really well across Europe ever since. But how will it dohere? I honestly can't fault the way it drove and there are worse cars onthe road in terms of managing bumps and holes. The cabin is smaller than I'd like if I were comparing it with aNissan Qashqai. I think the rear-seat room isn't as good. Thewindscreen also felt awful close. And frankly I'd like a few moresafety/preventative items such as ESP. But the farmer's son in me can only acknowledge that they have puttogether an extremely low-cost motor here without impinging oncomfort, in the cabin and on the road. In England I think they gave it a bad name by going sub-basementwith equipment. I think they didn't even bother with a radio in thebasic of basic versions. I could quibble with rear seat space (pity because the roomy bootcould easily have contributed some to it), fairly blunt/modestlooks and intrusions of cheapness even on the top-spec model (wherethe colour of the plastic inlay along the central console/handbrakearea was heinous). I know there are those in the motor business here who point to itsrelatively low three-star NCAP score (most boast five these days). And I know there are those who point to the poise, comfort andequipment levels of the cars this aims to undercut in price byanything from €8,000 upwards. But ultimately if you want a new car for less than €15,000(make that €15,600 because they are charging at most €600for delivery and related charges), then you have to realisticallyexpect a cutting of cloth according to measure. Indeed, the Duster price will have quite a few thinking of buyingsecond-hand to opt for new. The Ripley boys no doubt remembered a different era; a differentcar but the same maker's name.
