Fireplaces add architectural weight to a space. The detail and dimension set a focal point for any room. A beautiful fireplace adds a sense of romance and class--but a worn, dilapidated mantle can detract from the rest of your décor. Stripping and repainting or staining your fireplace mantle is a fairly simple task when taken step by step. The materials you need can be found in the paint department at hardware and home improvement stores. Instructions as follows: Firstly, clean cubic stone and other masonry mantles with a solution of gentle detergent and hot water. Use a sponge or plastic abrasive pad to loosen stubborn soot and ash. Secondly, use grout cleaner to brighten up the grout lines. Use a stiff nylon brush to work the cleaner into the grout lines. Thirdly, patch, or repoint, any chipped or missing grout with a cement repair caulking of a matching color. Fourthly, clean the mantle before stripping with a solution of warm water and an oil soap, available in the paint department of your local hardware store. Use a soft sponge or cloth to clean the mantle. Many times that will be all that needs to be done to get the desired result. For mantles with a damaged finish, proceed to the next step. Fifthly, brush on a coat of gel type stripper. Allow it to sit for the recommended time. Use a plastic abrasive scrubber, stiff nylon brushes or a thin putty knife to remove the old finish. Rinse the surface with oil soap and allow to dry. Repeat the process for stubborn finishes. Sixthly, fill any cracks or chips in the wood of the mantle with professional-grade solvent-based wood filler. These fillers dry harder and take stain better than water-based fillers. Seventhly, apply a coat of penetrating oil-based stain in your choice of colors with a soft bristle brush. Work carefully around carved details to avoid buildup and runs in the finish. Eighthly, follow the supplier or manufacturer's directions for wiping excess stain and drying time before proceeding to the next step. Ninthly, sand the surface lightly with a very fine-grit paper to smooth any grain that may have been raised in the staining process. Use a soft, dry brush to remove any dust. Tenthly, apply at least two coats of clear poly or other clear furniture finish. Use a soft bristle brush and work carefully to prevent buildup, which can cause runs and drips in the finish. Eleventh, apply a coat of spray primer. This will prepare the surface without buildup, preserving the carved and molding details. Twelfth, sand the surface lightly after the primer dries to provide the best possible surface for painting. Thirteenth, apply at least two coats of semigloss latex paint in your choice of colors. Use a fine, soft bristle brush. Keep the brush well loaded and work in long, even strokes. Keep a damp rag handy to catch drips and runs before they dry, leaving blemishes in your finish.
