Outdoor fountains are a soothing addition to any landscape. You can make them more attractive by adding a mosaic design directly over the concrete fountain. Look for ceramic or porcelain mosaic tiles at a home improvement store for this project; or you can break ceramic and porcelain plates, bowls and other materials available from yard sales, flea markets and thrift stores. Instructions as follows: Firstly, allow your outdoor fountain to dry completely before adding the mosaic. Concrete absorbs moisture and it's a good idea to bring it indoors for a week so it will dry completely. You can also allow it to sit in the sun for several days, but cover it at night with plastic to avoid dew. Secondly, break your ceramic bowls, cups and plates by placing them in a plastic bag, sealing it and then wrapping the bag in a towel. Striking the material with a hammer through the towel is the safest way to break ceramics into pieces. You can also choose to purchase mosaic tiles from your local craft store if you prefer a more uniform look for your finished mosaic fountain. Thirdly, apply a thin layer of thinset on the face of your outdoor fountain. Work in small sections at a time. If you are planning to mosaic a concrete bowl-type water fountain, turn the bowl upside down and apply thinset to the outside of the bowl first. After you mosaic the outside, you can flip it over and mosaic the top rim and the inside of the bowl. Fourthly, press the mosaic maintenance material into the thinset. Leave at least 1/8 of an inch between the pieces so you can add grout. Work your way over the face of the fountain, adding thinset and mosaic material as you go until your fountain is covered to your specifications. Let the adhesive dry completely according to the manufacturer's instructions. Fifthly, press exterior grout into the space between the mosaic pieces. You can cover the entire surface quickly with a grout float. Make sure that you remove all of the grout from the top of the tiles or ceramic pieces before it dries. You can wipe away the grout with warm water and a sponge, but plan to go over the surface several times to remove all of the excess grout and film. Let the grout dry. Sixthly, apply grout sealer within three days. Follow the manufacturer's application instructions. Finally, let me have a short conclusion.
