Long ago, a gold mining camp on the Mokulmne River California was mined by the 49ers. This place could only be accessed by horseback and since it was so inaccessible most of the gold still exists. This gold mining camp is a special place because activities are focused on family recreation. Adults and children may visit and have fun in this gold mining camp. It not only has activities for gold mining but also has camping on the Mokulmne River California. With regard to activities in line with gold mining, the camp has prepared a guided gold mining tour so that they may orient their guests with their mining operation after which they invite the guests to mine their own gold through panning, dredging and sluicing. After the guided tour, the guide shows the guest how gold is obtained through panning. Then when the guests would wish to use this method, s/he will first have to purchase a patented pan from the general store of the camp. Panning is done by scooping up material from a placer deposit using a pan. The material is then gently agitated in water until the gold sinks to bottom of the pan. Should the guest wish to dredge gold, every cabin in the area has a dredging equipment which may be used by the guest. One dredge, 5” maximum or one equivalent piece of mining equipment per cabin is allowed. This rule does not apply to gold pans or small sluice boxes. Sluicing will take a longer period of time before the whole operation is completed. Gravel piles have to be dug up and processed to remove larger rocks that are non-gold bearing. The whole sluicing method will take five to six days before the operation is done. The beauty of all this gold mining adventures, guests get to keep the gold. With regard to camping on the Mokulmne River, there are a number of things guests can do. In the Mokulmne River, there are three forks that meet turning it into a river of unsurpassed natural beauty where tadpoles and fish can be seen swimming in its clear water. There are varying sizes of rocks which are ideal for diving- for those who dare. Just around the Mokulmne River are waterfalls and rock formation about forty feet high. Somewhere in the Mokulmne River is a quiet and secluded area also known as a “swimming hole” where the guest may swim. Guests may hike down the trail of the Mokulmne River Canyon and may pass the trails the 49ers once used. While camping, guest may have a picnic by the riverside where tables and a fire ring are.
