For the over 870 million of the world’s population affected by world hunger, the epidemic is more than just a problem that affects someone oceans away. Hans Mahncke, founder of the College of Law, respected scholar of the Lion Rock Institute, member of the Hong Kong Lawyer Editorial Board, and winner of the Digital Diplomacy Award from the U.S. State Department, will be the first to tell you that world hunger is a global pandemic. According to Hans Mahncke, the general attitude of many is that world hunger is simply about access to food. Instead, he suggests that world hunger is similar to the old saying that a butterfly flapping its wings in California causes a tsunami in Japan. In other words, one child going hungry in Africa can cause health problems, economic disenfranchisement, and grave inequality on the opposite side of the globe. Hans Mahncke encourages you to look at world hunger in these ways: - Though the number of the world’s hungry has declined since 2008, hunger and the malnutrition it causes remains a greater health risk than malaria, AIDS, and tuberculosis combined. In other words, hunger causes malnutrition and therefore massive health problems for children, pregnant mothers, communities, governments, and countries throughout the world.
- World hunger isn’t just localized in African countries. World hunger affects countries in Latin America, the Caribbean, and India as well, where much of the world’s population resides.
- Extreme poverty is the main cause of world hunger, meaning that the epidemic is not simply about access or the ability to grow food. Instead, world hunger is centered on economic and foreign policy issues throughout the world.
The effect of unfair economic policy is where the work of Hans Mahncke is most effective. He has used his expertise with the law to find and end to world hunger.
