When a person is trying to lose weight of about 5 pounds or 50 pounds, the same principle would determine the amount of weight lost and how fast it is lost. Just following the guidelines and keeping them in practice, would help in the weight loss and there would be no need for the special diet plans, medications or books.

The body weight of the human being is determined by the amount of energy that one would take in as food and amount of energy that would be expended in various activities. If the weight of the body remains static, then one is taking the same amount of calories that one would burn in a day. If one is slowly increasing the weight, it can be that the caloric intake is more than the number of calories that one is actually burning through the day. There are several people who may their resting metabolic rate to be slightly higher or lower than average. The people usually have inherited this factor. The weight of the body would also play a role in determining the calories one would burn. The more the number of calories required maintaining the body in its present state, the more would be body weight. For others it is the lifestyle and working habits would determine the number of calories that would be needed by the body. For people who are working in a heavy physical labor, they would naturally burn more calories than a person who would sit on a desk for most of the day. For those who lead this sedentary work, they would require intense exercise regime that would burn the total number of calories.

As rough estimates, one can safely conclude that a woman of 31 to 50 years of age, and who leads a sedentary life would need about 1800 calories per day to maintain he normal weight. A man having the same clauses would be needing about 2200 calories. If the human being were involved in moderate level of physical exercises, the person would need additional 200 calories per day.

The best way to lose weight is by reducing the number of calories one would consume while increasing the total number of calories one would burn through the physical activity. For those who think otherwise, there are various weight loss Charlotte NC programs available in clinics. To lose about one pound, the human body needs to burn about 3500 calories. The person can achieve this by either lessening the amount of food he or she intakes or increase the physical activity. The ideal situation is one where the human being does both.

For example, if there is a person who consumes about 500 extra calories, per day for one week without any alteration to activity would gain about one pound. Likewise, if someone does not take 500 calories, the person would lose one pound. The following are some food items and their calories count.

• One can of cola: 150 calories • One quarter pound of hamburger with cheese: 500 calories • One slice of original style crust pepperoni pizza: 230 calories, etc.

All the activities conducted by the body would be adapted to the BMR which would further determine the amount of calories burnt. For example, the 170 pound person who walks for 45 minutes would burn about 300 calories.
