Hormone replacement therapy or HRT is the use of hormones for medical treatment. This therapy is given to either complement a lack of the natural synthesized hormones that are released in the body or in order to substitute other hormones this hormone replacement therapy is most commonly given in case of menopause. In females who are menstruating there is a cyclic rise and fall in the estrogen and progesterone levels every month. These changes in the hormonal levels are responsible for various events in the menstrual cycles. The release of ovum from the ovaries and their fate is largely regulated by these hormones. Besides performing functions related to the reproductive system, these hormones have an important homeostatic action. They are responsible for maintain the calcium levels in the body. The deposition of calcium in the bones is increased in the presence of these hormones. In women estrogen is responsible for positive bone metabolism. The other important function that estrogen performs is maintaining the vitality of the organs of the body. Oregon HRT takes care of all these issues. There are many pathological conditions that hamper function of the ovaries and the ovaries need to be removed at an early age, also there may be malfunction of the organ and an inherent decrease in the hormonal levels. These cases require an external supply of the hormones to maintain the normal physiologic processes that take place in the body. The cessation of menses is known as menopause. This phenomenon occurs in females around the early to mid forties. During the menopause stage the cyclic increase and decrease of female hormones does not take place. A fall in the normal levels of estrogen and progesterone has several systemic side effects. In the lack of these hormones, shows many symptoms in menopausal women. These symptoms may constitute the menopausal syndrome characterized by flushing, sweating, uneasiness, tachycardia etc. the bone metabolism is also hampered. There is increased dissolution of calcium from the bones. This leads to increased fragility of bone. The incidence of bony fracture is highly increased in menopausal women. To compensate for the decreased levels of the hormones, hormone therapy is given. These externally administered estrogens and progestins maintain hormone levels and perform all the functions necessary. Such therapies are given either at the time of menopause or in early stages of life if there is a fall in hormonal levels in the body due to certain pathological conditions. These medicines also have a stimulatory effect on the brain. The brain directs the ovaries to produce more of these hormones and so the external requirements may be decreased. Thus, this is a cyclic feedback mechanism that maintains the hormone levels in the body. Sometimes, the male hormone testosterone may also be given if replacement is required.
