The FA Cup is the oldest association football competition in the world. In 1872, Wanderers Football Club won the first title in the history of FA Cup football. The record for the most wins is held by Manchester United with 11 triumphs, followed by Arsenal with 10 and Tottenham Hotspur with 8. The titleis held by Wigan Athletic, who defeated Manchester City 1-0 in the 2013 final. FA Cup Football 1950s The crowds continued to fill the stadiums in the 1950s. FA Cup finals were no exception. Almost all finals in this decade had 100,000 spectators or more. Today’s Premier League clubs such as Newcastle, Arsenal, Man Utd, Man City, Liverpool and Aston Villa began to dominate this prestigious tournament. The decade’s best FA Cup Final, and one of the best games in the history of football, was played between Blackpool and Bolton Wanderers in the 1953 Final. Blackpool took an early lead but was trailing 1-3 at the beginning of the second-half. Mortensen’s second goal of the day gave Blackpool some hope but with only some minutes to go they were still trailing 3-2. Then, with one minute remaining of regular time, Mortensen completed his hat-trick by scoring directly from a free-kick. A heroic Blackpool seemed to take the match into extra time. But it would be even worse for Bolton. With just seconds left before extra time Matthews played the ball in to Perry who scored 4-3 to Blackpool. Blackpool won the Cup for the first time in their history. Club of the decade: Newcastle United Football Club was founded in 1892. They won the FA Cup three times in the 1950s (1951, 1952 and 1955). The 1955 title is Newcastle’s last title of importance. Player of the decade: Stan Mortensen scored a hat-trick in the 1953 FA Cup Final. He is still the last player to score a hat-trick in a Final. Mortensen played 317 games scoring 197 goals for Blackpool. He also played 25 caps for England scoring 23 goals.
