Ad-free news is something that is still difficult for Americans to come by. We’re a country that loves free things. Freedom is, after all, what we stand for. We have freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and on Tuesdays, kids eat free at Applebees! The irony that surrounds ad-free news is that ad-free news isn’t free. Advertisements make news free. That’s why the websites where you get your information from are littered with ads and taglines selling you different products and services. You’re able to receive the news for free because you’re able to tolerate being bombarded with advertisements. When you’ve been faced with ads day in and day out for years, it’s easy to block them out. Ad-free news requires a payment or subscription of sorts. This is why ad-free news hasn’t quite taken off in America yet. People aren’t demanding it In other countries, however, ad-free news is becoming all the rage. So much, in fact, that one Dutch news site crowdfunded €1,000,000 in a mere eight days to keep the site up and running. Just to put that into perspective, that’s $1,313,700. Creator, Rob Wijnberg, was quite shocked at the response to his website. His goal was to attract 15,000 members and in just over a week he was able to secure 17,000 people who are on board for ad-free news. This type of phenomenon is huge because it proves that the demand for ad-free news does exist. The question now is how do we strengthen the demand for ad-free news on our own soil? When it comes to other ad-free services, Americans are on board. Services like Pandora, Hulu, and close to all smartphone applications have ad-free alternatives. The only stipulation is that you have to pay. The aforementioned companies are making a killing on ad-free versions of their services. Smartphone applications, Pandora, and Hulu are, for the most part, seen as entertainment. When someone wants to listen to their favorite musical artist, watch their favorite television show, or play a game of Angry Birds, they’re doing so to be entertained. They don’t want to be interrupted by advertisements. This is where the ad-free news industry might soon luck out. The news is quickly becoming another form of entertainment. It is becoming more and more entertaining because of the various ways in which it is reported. The more entertaining something becomes, the less an audience wants to be interrupted. This is the route that ad-free news services need to take in order to succeed and make a name for themselves. They have to sell ad-free news as another form of entertainment. People spend so much money annually on entertainment, because entertainment is used to escape the “real world” for a bit. There are people out there who enjoy simply reading the news. They don’t want to be bombarded with Gillette Razor ads. They want to read up on what is going on in the world, because that is what is entertaining for them. By referring to the news as another form of entertainment, ad-free news sites can appeal to a larger and more generous, in regards to spending, audience.
