We all know that Mexico is inexpensive. It's one of the main reasons why over a million Americans have made this country their home. That also goes for. The price of homes and condos here is significantly lower compared to similar properties in the U.S. or Canada. But this leads many people to the question - is Mexico the cheapest option for properties and the cost of living? If I could save money by heading south to Mexico, couldn't I save even more by heading to Central or South America? The answer: Sometimes, yes. There are places in other parts of the world that are less expensive than Mexico. Yet, this has to put into context of many other factors. For example, whether they cost less or more, there are distinct advantages for expats to choose Mexico as their new home country, including the following: It's close to home – Along with Canada, Mexico is the closest country to the United States. Americans can arrive to any part of the country in less than 4 hours. The flights cost very little, making it easy to make trips back home and to have friends and family come to visit. Other countries would be a minimum of 5 or 6 hours, if they are in Central America, and many don't have a regular direct flight. Costs increase significantly too. There are modern services – Mexico has modernized significantly over the past 3 decades, now offering everything from new malls with big-screen movie theaters to state-of-the-art hospitals. Banks and other services have also modernized considerably in their style of operation. This is not the case in many other inexpensive countries. It's economically and politically stable – Mexico's economy is among the top 10 strongest in the world and continues to grow. While it has its political ups and downs (like any country) it has a stable democracy without worries of revolutions, military coups or dictatorships. It's safe – In contrast to what the news would make you believe, many parts of Mexico are actually safer than most parts of the United States. For example, living in the city of Merida (Yucatan), you would be as save as you would be in Wyoming, one of the safest states. American stores and products can be found – Since Mexico is so close by and since so many expats already call it home, American stores and products have become much more available in many places over the past decade. While you can't find them everywhere, the fact is that you can actually find peanut butter or turkey gravy.
