A recent study out of the University of Florida has shown some surprising results about retail lighting. Most stores already know how important lighting is, but what often gets overlooked is that different parts of the stores require different kinds of light. The retail clothing industry has for years focused on bright overhead lights. These lights work well for putting light on certain garments and grabbing the customers’ attention. According to the University of Florida study, bright overhead lighting is not suited for the dressing room. The study focuses on 60 women shoppers between the ages of 18-35 who visited a major department store. The women surveyed found that the bright overhead lights casted uneven shadows on their faces. Women responded to the survey that this uneven light was very distracting and took away from their dressing room experience. Many retail stores have taken advantage of a great alternative building process called modular construction. This process fabricates the dressing room through a streamlined building process in an off-site factory. Furthermore, modular walls use raceways which can be pre-wired for electrical lines. This design makes for an easy addition for front facing lighting, which is much more flattering to the customer. In conclusion, lighting is very important to the retail experience. A few simple changes to dressing room lighting and dressing room design can go a long way to improving sales and providing a better retail experience for the customer.
