As an older baby boomer, I just made it to the tail end of good what I call electronica as an umbrella “catch-all” of any songs that can be made using devices such as Thermin, a sound synthesizer and even a computer. A new musician (at least new to me), Derek Delacroix has taught me those were just the basics. Blend numerous other music genres and you’ve got what I call “Derekanama”. Growing up, the only instrument available to create such music was the Moog synthesizer and my cousin played one in my band. But today, there are so many different types of what I call electronica music. Today, I was brought into the 21st century with an original music genre that, I feel confident, was created by Derek. A few examples today are Ambient, Ambient dub (and a few other Ambients), Breakbeat, Down Tempo, Acid Jazz, Techno, Down Tempo (including acid jazz), and a myriad of others. When I was growing up and playing music, there were only a few bands experimenting with any of it; Sting (then called The Police), Yes, and ELP (Emerson Lake & Palmer). A musician has emerged who combines the electronica feel with hip-hop, jazz, reggae, soul, and dance to create an original sound of which you will not forget. Today, there’s an up and coming artist in this San Diego artist, and you may be doing yourself a favor by downloading a few of his well crafted originals such as his opening number “So Mellow”, “Dance City”, “Night Song Of The Jungle”, and my favorite “Dub Dynamite”. To me Dub Dynamite sounds as if it could easily be the background (or possibly the theme) to the latest blockbuster sci fi film or even a 60s Alfred Hitchcock show. Derek is clearly past the experimental stage. I find many electronica artists more fascinated with the technology than playing real music. Derek leaves one with feeling that the technology is but the tool that he’s learned to play to make people want to listen. I am now a fan. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Derek Delacroix is a San Diego Musicianwho has numerous free downloads at Soundcloud.
