Today with technology, mostly smartphones, I hear people saying “why should I even where a watch?” I am always mystified by this proclamation. How can you take for granted the amazing technical feat that even a cheap watch is? The concept of something so small that doesn’t need a battery to work and worn on the wrist, can be a statement of engineering and art. However, this thought rarely occurs. Watches are an engineering masterpiece and expression of art. This is why some are highly collectable and desired all of which lead to the joy of watch collecting. Of course there are those people that like the flash. Yes, perhaps rappers or certain celebrities come to mind. Next the status seekers emerge. These individuals are only interested in showing off or hinting, well actually shouting look at me I am rich. Unfortunately, these people give the watch collecting world a bad name. Most individuals that are true aficionados probably don’t own a single diamond encrusted or iced out watch. Why, you may ask? Simply because collectors are not interested in jewelry, they are interested in the watch itself and in things such as the movement, where was it made, what’s the history (known as provenance), just to list a few. Collectors appreciate real individual craftsmanship. Some of the considered best watches are all handmade and can take hours to months to even years to produce. Yes, these watches are very expensive, but that’s where the “watches are art” part enters in the discussion. How does one value a Picasso? In May of 2010 Christie’s Auction Company sold a Patek Philippe for $5.7 million. The good news for those of us that are unable to part with the entirety of our retirement plans and then some or those of us that had that great protestant conservative work ethic instilled, there are many affordable and highly collectable brands to choose form. Perhaps vintage might be your thing. Many great vintage watches are priced from $200 to $500. I suggest looking at vintage Omegas. Other great brands that are budget minded to consider on the brand new side are Tissot and Hamilton. Always keep in mind that you should buy the best you can afford, but most importantly buy what you love. Even an inexpensive watch that you love will endure the test of time and will always bring a sense of enjoyment. The most important thing is to understand if you like or love it others will too. Should you see somebody wearing a nice watch, feel free to compliment or ask them about the watch. I always enjoy being asked about any of my watches and so do most collectors and it’s possible you might learn something or even gain a new friend. A real collector leaves all pretentiousness behind.
