If you look closely at a map of the world, focusing your gaze at the Indian Ocean, you’re bound to see two tiny dots marked Mauritius and Maldives, south of the Indian Peninsula and a little bit west of the island of Madagascar respectively. If you have serious travellers among your friends, all it will take to make them envious is mentioning a Mauritius or a Maldives holiday. Both island destinations are strikingly beautiful, not to mention that they also possess a vast cultural heritage and are characterised by a quiet serenity that can be found only in a few other locations in the world. Here’s what makes vacation packages to the Maldives and Mauritius so popular. • Mauritius Mauritius really knows how to keep up with the times, despite its secluded nature. The Pereybere Beach has been dubbed as Mauritius’ own Venice Beach, and rightly so. There’s food, art, culture, shopping, music, drink and a whole lot of warm people hanging around here, and it should definitely be on the top of your agenda. It’s a little chaotic, though, so be warned. However, if what you seek is quiet and not noise, you might want to the Labourdonnais Orchards. Hire a bicycle and pedal your way through the lush greenery, aromatic flowers and exotic tropical plants and trees. Of course, a Mauritian vacation would not be complete without a visit to the beach, which is why we also recommend paying a visit to the famous Grand Bay. Try out your hand at adventure sports such as parasailing, water skiing and windsurfing. You could also sign up for a lesson in surfing at the nearby Tamarin or Le Morne beaches, which are internationally renowned surfing hotspots. Lastly, for the lazy holidaymakers who want to do nothing, visit Belle Mare and let your hair down on this clean strip of white, untouched sand. Oh, there’s Port Louis too, where you can sample some lip smacking Mauritian food! • Maldives Closer to the African continent than it is to India, the Maldives are a beach destination like Mauritius, but is distinct from it in many ways. For example, where water sports such as water skiing and surfing are popular in Mauritius, the Maldives is famous for being one of the world’s most beautiful deep sea diving sites. Over a thousand species of marine life thrive in the crystal waters that surround the islands, a lot of them coming out only at night. Don’t forget to take a nocturnal dive! With the archipelago consisting of over a thousand islands, and with just one resort on each island, tourists are assured enough to see and do, and enough peace and quiet too! So there you have it. The lowdown on two of the world’s most popular tropical island getaways, while a Maldives holiday or a stay in Mauritius can be a bit heavy on the wallet, it’s all worth it. Trust us!
