For protecting the knee joint from the impact of sudden knocks, doctors often recommend people to regularly use knee braces. These medically approved braces are instrumental in maintaining your balance as well, and are also generally prescribed in the list of rehabilitation tools and accessories that are essential after a complete or partial knee replacement. Let us here take you through some of the main types of orthopaedic knee braces: a. Functional knee braces – Orthopaedic specialists generally prescribe these braces, after a joint replacement surgery has already been performed on the knee. Functional braces go a long way in preventing excess pressure being put on the anterior cruciate ligament, which can complicate the post-surgical recovery process. b. Patella braces – Available in the form of flexible neoprene sleeves, patella braces prevent sudden dislocations in this crucial section of the knee joint. They help in ensuring that the patella bones do not get dislocated, due to a sudden fall while exercising or doing any other recuperative activities following knee replacements. c. Unloader braces – If you have chronic arthritis problems in the knee, your consultant orthopaedic doctor would almost surely recommend unloader braces for you. The braces help in maintaining proper joint mobility and flexibility levels – and even alleviate pains to a considerable degree. d. Knee immobilizer braces – For getting a high degree of protection from thigh and/or shin fractures, these are considered to be the ideal support tools. If you already have suffered a knee injury, any good surgeon in Kolkata will tell you to use immobilizer braces. After a knee replacement operation, immobilizers help in preventing further injuries. e. Prophylactic knee braces – The prophylactic braces were used to be considered as the most suitable form of knee brace for staying away from medial cruciate ligament tears and strains – but, over the last few years, questions have been raised about their actual efficacy. The relatively high price tag of prophylactic braces has also resulted in a fall in their popularity. f. Motion control braces – If you need to move your lower limbs in similar, repetitive motions for extended periods of time, motion control braces can lower the resultant pressure on the ligaments and tendons associated with the joint. Knee surgeons typically recommend motion control braces with metallic supports – that provide extra support and balance to the wearer. There are corresponding shoulder sleeves available too, which serve as a viable way to lower the risks of having to get a shoulder joint replacement surgery. g. Patelloformal knee braces – These are almost similar to the general patella braces. They ensure that the patella bones are getting aligned in the correct manner – after a knee replacement operation. Improper ligament movements can lead to excruciating pains in the lower limbs – and the patelloformal braces alleviate this problem to a large extent. Several alternative types of patelloformal braces are available in the market. h. Rehabilitative braces – After all types of custom fit knee surgery in India, wearing these braces (at least for a period of 4-6 weeks) is an absolute must. As you resume walking/light jogging exercises, they make sure that the newly inserted prosthetic does not get accidentally jerked out of position. Rehabilitative braces can reduce the inflammations and swelling that generally occur after painful knee-twists as well. i. Bledsoe knee braces – Advanced Bledsoe braces have simple and easy-to-operate locking systems, which keep the knee fully extended – while exercising, or simply walking. If you have recently undergone an anterior cruciate ligament replacement surgery in India, you will need to wear a Bledsoe brace for a few weeks. Over time, using these braces can restore the balance and movement-range of the knee joint. Just like the hip/spinal belts that have to be worn after a hip replacement surgery, you need to ensure that knee braces are being put on in just the right manner. Incorrectly positioned braces can end up causing more harm than good on your already weakened knee joint. Knee support braces are ideal for maintaining limb health and a speedy post-operative recovery – but you must consult a qualified doctor before starting to use them.
