Historically, bouquets are not made of flowers but of spices, herbs and garlic. These were used to symbolize fertility, at the same time used to keep bad spirits away from the newlywed couples. However it was in the early 1900’s that the tradition was broken when Queen Victoria decided to replace these herbs and spices with freshly picked flowers for her wedding. The flowers that were traditionally used for bouquets were ivy, thistle and heather. Fast-forward to the recent times, brides are now the ones who pick the kinds of flowers she would hold during her wedding; primarily chosen based on shapes, colours and scent. The motif of the wedding is considered also in determining the style and type of flowers used on wedding bouquets. A hand bouquet comes in different styles: hand tied, cascade and free form. In this article, we are listing down some of the styles of hand bouquets brides can choose from when planning their wedding. 1. Hand Tied. This is one of the frequently used styles of wedding bouquet for its ability to look good regardless of what type of flower is used. It has a natural feel in it and features unlimited arrangement possibilities. Its distinct feature is the non-elimination of the flower’s natural stem put together using pretty ribbons. Florists often recommend not using pansies and daffodils for this particular style of hand bouquet. 2. Contemporary. Often called ‘freeform’, a contemporary style of hand bouquet doesn’t require specific design or shape – the more foliage, the better. Frequently used flowers for this style are the ones that grow in the tropical region. Florists usually experiment on the items they include on this particular bouquet style. Some of the items that have been used in the recent times are fruits, berries and the likes. 3. Crescent/ Cascade. As with the style’s name, the flowers in this style of bouquet usually flow down from both its sides. This style is best for wedding gowns with wide skirts as it highlights the gown’s style. On the other hand, if the bride prefers to carry this one below her waste, the bouquet would stand out and would look even better – definitely perfect for pictures. 4. Round. The styles of bouquet called nosegay, posy and breidermeier are common round bouquet styles. The nosegay style features less flowers and more on the greens while posy are the regular round flower bouquets seen on most weddings. Breidermeier, as florists would describe, is ‘unique’ as the flowers used are usually of the same type and are arranged in a round or circular pattern. Apart from these four styles, some of the frequently used wedding bouquet styles are ‘composite’, ‘pomander’ and ‘teardrop’.
