Planning to redecorate your room? You have purchased rolls of new wallpaper murals, but don’t have an idea on how to install it? Here’s a quick step by step instructions to a do-it-yourself wallpaper mural installation. Step 1: Prepare the Walls Start with removing the furniture, covering the floor with used newspapers and clearing the stuff hanging on the walls in the room that you would be making over. After which, ensure that the walls are clear from blemishes and stains by applying a primer paint as these stains often show through the newly applied wallpaper mural if not treated prior to installation. For new walls, apply a high-quality oil-based primer to avoid the walls quickly absorbing moisture from the wallpaper adhesive. Step 2: Prepare the Wallpaper Mural Study the design of the purchased wallpaper mural and decide which parts should be highlighted; and which ends should meet the ceiling and the floor. Don’t forget to leave the wallpaper with 6-inch allowance vertically and 1/2-inch horizontally. These should work as your template for the next wallpapers that you would be cutting. Next, immerse the wallpaper in water for 15 seconds, making sure it’s free from air bubbles. Ensure that the wallpaper was soaked entirely, then slowly remove it from the tray used and lay face down on a table. Step 3: Apply the Adhesive Fold both ends of the wallpaper mural towards the end and apply the adhesive on both sides. This process is called ‘booking’. This process forms the adhesive used and helping it to be distributed equally on the wallpaper’s surface; allowing you to handle or carry the wallpaper with ease. Repeat the process on all the prepared wallpapers. Step 4: Hang the Wallpaper Mural Prior to hanging the wallpapers, mark the wall using a pencil as guide when installing the murals. Next, ‘un-book’ the wallpapers and install them from the edge of the ceiling, pressing down until you reach the floor – ensure that you follow the marking. At the same time, try not to move the wallpaper around as it may end up being stretched and deforming the design and pattern. Ensure the corners are free from wrinkles, too. If a wrinkle appears, cut a slit in the wallpaper and reapply it back to the wall. A useful tip is to either use a pair of sharp scissors or a utility knife. After doing so, smooth out the wallpaper murals by using a brush especially made for installing wallpaper murals. Ensure that you only use a vertical stroke when doing the process. Repeat the process on all the wallpapers. Step 5: Polishing Touches After completely installing all the wallpapers, trim the excess wallpapers from all its corners. Press the wallpapers as tightly using a wide straightedge material. To trim the wallpaper, use a sharp utility knife to ensure you don’t damage the installed wallpaper.
