Epilepsy has different types on the basis of severity and the brain area affected. It is more of a concern during pregnancy or when someone loses consciousness causing injury to head or bones. Classification:- 1. Focal/Partial seizures:- They occur when abnormal activity is constrained to specific area of the brain. • Simple focal seizures: - They may get manifested in form of dizziness, altered sensations, emotions or speech and involuntary jerking of limbs. They may not necessarily cause unconsciousness. • Dyscognitive focal seizures: - Loss of consciousness along with repetitive or purposeless movements occurs in this type of seizures. 2. Generalized seizures:- They occur when abnormal activity is not restricted to a part of brain but happens all over the brain. • Absence seizures. Absence seizures, also called petit mal seizures, are characterized by staring, subtle body movement and loss of consciousness. • Tonic seizures:- Characterized by muscle stiffening and losing balance • Clonic seizures: - Include jerking movements in neck, face and arms. • Myoclonic seizures: - Sudden, unexpected jerks in hands or legs. • Atonic seizures: - They are also known as drop seizures. They are associated with reduced or lack of muscle control dropping you on the floor. • Tonic-clonic seizures. :- Also known as grand mal seizures, they are serious in nature. They cause loss of unconsciousness along with jerky movements of the body. Causes:- • Genetic factors • Developmental disorders like autism and neurofibromatosis • Head injury • Dementia • Brain tumors or strokes • Prenatal brain damage • Oxygen deprivation during birth • Other diseases like HIV AIDS, Meningitis and encephalitis Diagnosis:- • Complete history -first occurrence of disease, duration and frequency • Complete physical exam • Complete Blood test(CBC) • CT,MRI, PET scan to detect abnormalities like tumors, cysts in brain • EEG-to detect abnormal activity in the brain • Cerebro-spinal fluid test to measure pressure around the brain • Neuropsychological tests:- To assess cognitive functions like memory, thinking and speech • Single-photon emission computerized tomography (SPECT) to determine exact location of seizures. Treatment:- • Anti-epileptic medication to reduce intensity of seizures Alternate therapies:- • Vagus nerve stimulation: - In this method, a device called a vagus nerve stimulator is fixed underneath the chest skin, connected to vagus nerve in neck through wires. Electric energy is sent to brain via vagus nerve. The exact procedure of inhibition of seizures through this procedure is unknown, yet it has 20-40% success. • Ketogenic diet: - Intake of diet high in fats and low in carbohydrates for a few years. Body breaks fats molecules up to build energy. Special concern is to be provided for malnutrition. In addition with above treatments, regular check-up, disease awareness and healthy life style habits are also recommended.
